“Don’t worry. I’ll go find him right now,” Beckett said. Before leaving, he shot Eloise a sharp look. “You stay right here. Don’t go anywhere.”
Eloise stayed silent. Beckett hurried out, clearly heading for Cyrus’s office.
Felice and Bertha exchanged a look. To them, it seemed like Cyrus was trying to weaken Beckett’s position by transferring Eloise away. After all, Eloise was Beckett’s most trusted aide.
In wealthy families, power struggles were constant, with everyone guarding against everyone else.
Eloise sat back down and tried to review a project file, but her mind kept drifting.
An hour later, Beckett returned, looking grim. He stopped in front of Eloise’s desk. “You’re staying. I’ve talked it through. with my father.” With that, he walked straight into his office.
Eloise had no idea why Cyrus suddenly wanted to transfer her. She guessed it might have something to do with what happened yesterday. Cyrus must have misunderstood her relationship with Beckett.
But to be fair, Cyrus wasn’t exactly mistaken. She didn’t have feelings for Beckett, but Beckett clearly hadn’t been keeping things professional.
Whatever Beckett said to his father worked. In the end, Eloise was allowed to stay.
Later that afternoon, Cyrus’s secretary showed up again. “Ms. Caldwell, could you swing by VirtuFusion Group and check the details for Friday’s meeting with Finn?” she asked.
Eloise nodded. Before leaving, Eloise knocked on Beckett’s door
“Come in,” Beckett said.
Eloise walked in, the place reeked of smoke, making her cough a few times. Beckett was slouched in his chair, puffing away, looking all moody and messed up.
Eloise guessed things with Cyrus didn’t go well, so Beckett was sulking here, chain-smoking.
“Mr. Hayes, I’m going over to VirtuFusion Group to check in on the details for Friday’s meeting,” Eloise said, giving him a heads-up. She was Beckett’s secretary, after all.
Beckett’s distant gaze turned to her. After a pause, he said quietly “Eloise, about yesterday, I was messing with you. Just forget about it.”
Eloise’s eyes lit up instantly, relief spilling onto her face before she could hide it.
She complained softly. “Mr. Hayes, how could you mess with me like that? You scared me. I was this close to handing in my resignation.
“Seriously, don’t joke with me like that again. I’m a scaredy-cat. night actually quit, and then you’d lose the best secretary you’ve ever had.”
Eloise’s words, paired with her obvious relief, hurt Beckett. “What’s so wrong with being my girlfriend? Do you really hate the idea that much? Is it really such a big deal? You even wanted to quit just because of this!” Beckett shot back.
Eloise kept it casual. “Mr. Hayes, I see you as my boss. Nothing more. If anything else happened between us, it’d just be awkward as hell. We couldn’t work together anymore.”

Beckett was already feeling frustrated, and now Eloise’s words cut even deeper. He looked away and said, “Just go.”
Eloise walked out of the office and told Felice not to bother Beckett, who was in a foul mood.
Felice nodded. She wasn’t dumb. She’d noticed the cloud hanging over Beckett when he returned.
Eloise drove over to VirtuFusion Group and checked in with the receptionist.
“Ms. Caldwell, Mr. Pierce is in a meeting right now, and Mr. Truman is in there too. Feel free to head up and wait for them,” the receptionist said, and called the elevator for Eloise.
Grayson’s office was up on the twenty-second floor. When Eloise arrived, an assistant led her to the guest lounge.
About ten minutes later, Finn arrived, smiling even more warmly than usual. “Sorry to keep you waiting, Ms. Caldwell,” he said.
Eloise couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed. Finn was always so ridiculously polite.
With a seven-figure salary, secretaries like Finn were the kind everyone wanted to stay on the good side of, both inside and outside the company.
don’t mind waiting at all.”
Eloise stood up with a smile. “Mr. Truman, you’re always swamped. I
“No way, if I make you wait too long, Mr. Pierce will give me hell Finn joked.
Eloise’s cheeks turned red as she felt self-conscious. ‘How much does Finn know about me and Grayson?’ she wondered.
She quickly changed the subject. “Finn, let’s get started.” She knew Finn was busy, so it was best to keep things short and
sweet.
Finn and Eloise reviewed the meeting details for about half an hour.
When Eloise packed up to leave, Finn said, “About Friday’s meeting, Mr. Pierce would like to discuss a few things with you. He asked you to stop by his office.”
Finn sighed inwardly. ‘Honestly, if Mr. Pierce wants to see her, why not just say so? Now I have to make up some excuse for him.’
Finn found the secretary job exhausting. The regular duties were tough enough. On top of that, now he even had to help his boss pursue
Eloise.
Eloise hesitated for a moment, then followed Finn to Grayson’s office.
Grayson was on the phone, but when he noticed Eloise, he said a couple words and hung up. Finn, quick on the uptake, walked out and closed the door behind him.
Now it was just the two of them, and Eloise could feel her heart start to race. “Mr. Pierce, is there anything else about Friday’s meeting you want to go over?” she asked.
Grayson lounged back in his chair in a perfectly tailored suit, his long legs outlined by the suit pants. He looked devastatingly attractive.
Eloise remembered that five years ago, he’d already been in great shape, always working out, with clearly defined abs. She found herself wondering if he’d kept it up.
She’d heard that most guys started packing on the pounds and wound up with a beer belly as they got older. Apparently. Grayson had no beer belly. Whether he’d kept his abs was another question entirely.
Eloise’s face flushed crimson the moment she realized what she was thinking. She mentally scolded herself and forced
