**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
“Isk tsk. Lewis Group isn’t hers yet,” Ernesto said, arching an eyebrow with a hint of mischief. “The real president is still up on stage.”
Gordon opened his mouth to respond, but the words caught in his throat.
“A few kind words in her favor, and look at you—you’re practically on fire. You two must have formed quite a bond behind the scenes,” Ernesto continued, his tone dripping with insinuation.
“Ernesto, please, I have never wronged you. Don’t throw around baseless accusations like that. I am a devoted husband and a loyal member of this company. My relationship with Ms. Lewis is strictly professional,” Gordon insisted, his voice trembling slightly as agitation bubbled beneath the surface.
“Who’s to say what’s really going on?” Ernesto shrugged dismissively, casting a glance around at the other executives, who were all too eager to join in on the spectacle.
The senior executives present exchanged knowing glances, unable to suppress faint smirks that danced on their lips.
As the tension escalated, whispers began to ripple through the crowd, casting furtive glances at Gordon, their expressions tinged with suspicion. Even a few fellow shareholders regarded him with barely concealed disdain.
Just as Ernesto had suggested, Gordon’s transformation from critic to champion was striking. Could a staggering 50-billion-dollar cash infusion truly shift a person’s loyalty so dramatically?
It felt too convenient, too calculated. Was there something deeper brewing between him and Chloe, hidden from the prying eyes of the world?
Chloe was undeniably captivating—her striking beauty and graceful figure were enough to leave any man spellbound. It was no wonder that even Gordon found it challenging to resist her allure.
Yet, she always carried herself with an air of professionalism in public, a mask that concealed the true essence of her character. What was she really like when the doors closed, when the spotlight faded?
Could it be…?
Was it even remotely possible?
“You think there’s something more than just business between her and him?” a voice whispered from the crowd, barely audible but filled with intrigue.
“Don’t you dare speak about my sister like that!” Carolyn interjected, her voice rising as she struggled to keep her composure. “My sister is a good person. She would never engage in such behavior. She’s brilliant—she has her own life and ambitions. How could she be what you’re suggesting?”
“Since Ms. Lewis isn’t here, and no one has seen her, who really knows what she’s like?” a voice called out from the audience, followed by a low chuckle. “Mr. Lewis, just make your announcement already! If you have something significant to share, let’s hear it. You’ve kept us all hanging for too long.”
He had already instructed the lawyers to draft the share transfer agreement. All that remained was to declare that he would assign his remaining twenty percent stake to his two children, then step back and allow them to lead the company together.
Carolyn was young and impulsive, lacking the real-world experience of management. Chloe, on the other hand, though she had grown up far from the city, had consistently demonstrated her sharp business instincts. With Carolyn by her side, he genuinely believed that the Lewis Group could soar to new heights.
But now, with Chloe absent and unreachable, any announcement felt like an empty gesture—hollow and devoid of meaning.
The lights were set, the music was queued, the atmosphere had been perfectly orchestrated. And now… none of it mattered.
Arthur rushed back, making his way toward Charles. He leaned in, whispering a few urgent words. Charles’s expression shifted instantly, tightening with concern, and he muttered what sounded like a sharp reprimand. Arthur stood there, frozen, his silence speaking volumes.
Scott didn’t need to ask to understand what had transpired. Arthur must have failed to reach Chloe as well.
Was Chloe deliberately keeping her distance? Or had she never intended to attend this celebration at all? He had been so thrilled when she had agreed to come. Now, it all felt achingly empty.
“Since Chloe has chosen not to be here,” Scott began, raising a hand to quiet the murmuring crowd, his voice heavy with disappointment, “there seems little point in proceeding with my announcement. Ladies and gentlemen, regarding tonight’s celebration…”
