Sophia was left totally stunned, her mind spinning. “Theresia, you promised. You can’t just go back on your word.”
Theresia let out a short laugh. “Wow, Sophia, can you just let me finish for once? I said I didn’t want to get my hands dirty, but if I really can’t help myself, well, that’s a different story.”
Sophia’s face turned bright red. She looked like she was about to explode.
That’s when Patti finally decided to step in, all sweetness and fake concern. “Theresia, do you have to talk like that? President Manley and Mr. Jackson are both here. What do you think they’ll think of you?”
This was classic Patti. She loved using people as her shields, then swooping in to play the good guy.
Patti kept up the act, turning to Manley with a practiced smile. “President Manley, sorry you had to see that. Theresia’s always been a little blunt. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Patti, a proud graduate of the Harrisburg Academy of Fine Arts, already knew about the big anniversary celebration coming up. She’d called before, hoping for an invite, but Manley had shut her down without hesitation.
Judging by today’s scene, Manley was clearly planning to invite Theresia instead.
Patti couldn’t stand the idea of losing out. If she couldn’t have it, then Theresia wouldn’t either. She was determined to mess this up.
She hid a smirk. Manley was famous for being picky and looking down on people who acted arrogant or rude. After the way Theresia just spoke, he’d definitely think less of her.
But then Manley surprised everyone by laughing. “Teresa’s direct. She’s honest, just like her artwork. I respect that.”
Patti’s smile froze.
What just happened?
She pressed her lips together, her face stiff with frustration.
Just then, the person she’d been waiting for finally arrived, giving her the perfect excuse to leave. “President Manley, my friend’s here. We’ll head out. See you around.”
Patti kept her cool, holding tight to her purse as she walked off with as much grace as she could muster.
At the same moment, Theresia spotted a man walking in through the restaurant’s main entrance. He was dressed sharp, every move smooth and confident, instantly drawing all eyes.
Patti went right up to him, acting like they were close. “Lawrence, you made it. Let’s go up to the second floor.”
Lawrence had just gotten out of the hospital yesterday. Patti had been by his side the whole time, taking care of him while he recovered.
