Garry took the suit jacket from her and said, “You’re already here. Why don’t you stay a while?”
Theresia lifted an eyebrow, looking at him with a bit of doubt. Was he being a little too forward?
Before she could say anything, Garry had already grabbed her hand and pulled her down to sit beside him. He flashed her a smile. “I’ve had a few drinks. Take me home later, Tessie.”
She was caught off guard. His voice was always deep and a little rough, but tonight, with the alcohol, it sounded even more magnetic. The way he looked at her, full of meaning, and the way he called her “Tessie” made her ears burn.
It really felt like Garry was flirting with her.
One of the guys in the room laughed. “Well, I never expected to see this side of Garry. Tonight’s full of surprises.”
Clearly, he’d gotten the wrong idea about her and Garry. Theresia thought about clearing things up, but before she could, Garry leaned against her, acting tipsy. His broad shoulders in that white shirt were pressed up against her. Even through the thin fabric, she could feel how warm his skin was. His breath brushed against her neck, sending a shiver through her.
Then Garry spoke, sounding casual. “Tessie, the Kingsport bid is tomorrow. How confident are you?”
So he knew about the bidding. Why bring her out here so late at night? That wasn’t like him. Plus, he was acting so different from usual.
Something clicked for Theresia. She glanced at the men nearby and saw them all watching her, clearly surprised. She figured out what Garry was doing.
“If everything’s fair, I’m feeling good about it,” she replied. “I just hope there’s no behind-the-scenes dealing…”
Garry, tall and calm, looked down at her. “Teresa, I really did drink a lot. I wasn’t just faking it.”
She let go of him. He stood perfectly straight, a grin tugging at his lips.
See, he wasn’t that drunk after all.
Suddenly, Theresia felt lighter and teased him. “Not calling me Tessie anymore?”
They were only a few inches apart. Garry slid his hands into his pockets and stepped a little closer, narrowing the space between them. He leaned in, so close their noses almost touched. With a teasing smile, he asked, “What, do you like it when I call you Tessie?”
