Theresia turned around, feeling a wave of nerves she couldn’t quite explain. “Okay.”
Hanson started filling her in on Naomi, sharing everything he’d managed to dig up. He even pulled out a few videos and some photos he’d gotten from his contacts.
Theresia watched the videos, biting her lip, her eyebrows drawn tight. She replayed them again and again. Every single one showed Naomi getting bullied in prison—beaten so badly her face was swollen, stripped and humiliated. Each second felt like a needle stabbing into Theresia’s chest.
Eventually, Helena reached over and switched off the video. She looked at Theresia, worry all over her face. “Theresia, are you alright?”
Theresia was quiet for a long moment. Then, her voice low, she asked, “Leila did all this, didn’t she?”
Groups are their own little worlds, especially in a place like prison. There’s always someone preying on the weak, but this was different. Naomi was clearly being singled out. The only person who could be behind it was Leila.
Theresia should’ve seen it coming. Just sending Naomi to prison would never be enough for Leila. Even locked up, Leila would do everything she could to make Naomi’s life a nightmare.
Hanson nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. Leila paid them off. What you just saw—that’s been Naomi’s everyday life for the past ten years.”
Theresia’s hands curled into fists, her eyes turning cold. “That’s exactly the kind of thing Leila would do.”
Helena took one look at her and got nervous. She tried to calm her down. “Theresia, please, just breathe…”
“Theresia?”
Before Helena could finish, another voice broke in.
All three of them looked over. Helena, never one to hold back, immediately started cursing. “Oh, great. Lawrence. Just my luck. Can’t even eat without running into trash.”
Lawrence hesitated, his gaze deepening. “Theresia, have dinner with me. I’ll introduce you to my clients. Wasn’t it always your dream to stand by my side as Mrs. Lee?”
So he knew. He’d known the whole time, even if she never said it out loud.
Three years of marriage, and she’d dropped hints over and over, only for him to brush her off with some excuse every time. In the end, the woman standing next to him in public was Patti.
But now, Theresia didn’t care anymore. Not one bit.
Just then, she noticed another familiar figure walking up behind Lawrence.
She couldn’t hide the flicker of surprise in her eyes.
