As soon as Parrish got to Harrisburg, he called Teresa. She had promised him dinner, so there was no backing out now.
Teresa didn’t go alone, though. She brought Helena with her, just to make sure things didn’t get weird.
They met at the restaurant they’d agreed on. The moment Helena spotted Parrish through the window, her eyes lit up. She leaned in close to Teresa, unable to contain herself.
"Wow, Parrish looks even better in person. Seriously, he’s got it all—responsible, talented, good-looking, and fit. Teresa, why don’t you just go for it? Even if it doesn’t end in marriage, at least give dating a shot."
On the way over, Teresa had already told Helena about her situation with Parrish. Helena just felt it was a real pity.
Teresa kept her face blank. "Not interested."
Helena gave her a look. "You’re not interested in Parrish, but you like Garry? I mean, Parrish is amazing, but Garry’s on another level. I guess it’s never a good idea to compare people."
Why bring up Garry now?
Teresa’s expression went a little stiff, but before she could say anything, Parrish walked in and waved at them from across the room.
He joined them at the table, calm and collected, every move smooth and polite.
Helena greeted him with a big smile. "Hi, Parrish! I’m Helena. It’s great to finally meet you."
Parrish smiled back, polite but a little cautious. "Hi, I’m... Teresa’s friend. Nice to meet you too."
As he spoke, he glanced at Teresa, almost like he was checking how she’d react.
Helena picked up on that right away and couldn’t help but tease him. "Keep trying, Parrish. You know, friends can turn into something more. I’m rooting for you."
Teresa nudged Helena and gave her a look, silently begging her to cut it out.
Helena just grinned, pretending not to notice. "Honestly, Parrish, Teresa is amazing. There are so many guys chasing her, you’d have to line up all the way to France. You’d better bring your A-game."
Parrish didn’t know all the details, but watching them, he could tell Teresa and Helena were really close.
Before they’d even finished eating, Helena made up a flimsy excuse and left as soon as she was full. She was out the door before Teresa could even stop her.
Now it was just the two of them. They sat for a bit longer before heading out together.
It was dark by now. Stars were scattered across the sky, sparkling like bits of gold dust.
The night breeze was cool, and Teresa glanced around, looking a little out of place.
Parrish broke the silence. "Where do you live? I can give you a ride home."
Teresa turned to him, suddenly serious. "Parrish, I need you to know something. I was married before. And… I was pregnant once. I lost the baby, for a lot of reasons, but that happened. It’s part of my past."
