He Gave Her My Eyes A Story of Final Sight novel Chapter 26

Suddenly, Theresia couldn't help but wonder if every time she stood in front of him, dressed up in those vintage dresses he adored, he was really picturing Patti instead. Did he do that when they were in bed too?

The thought made her stomach twist. She doubled over, gagging, and before she could stop herself, she vomited all over Lawrence’s suit.

His expression shifted in an instant. Disgust flickered across his face before he tried to cover it up. “Theresia, you…” He caught himself and forced a gentler tone. “It’s probably just morning sickness. It’ll pass once you get through this stage. I know it’s hard on you, honey.”

She could hear the irritation in the way he scrubbed at his clothes, even though he tried to hide it. Theresia almost laughed. The baby was already gone, just a pool of blood now. How could she possibly have morning sickness? Lawrence, if you only knew your child was already gone, what kind of face would you make then?

Her stomach still felt raw, so she just stayed quiet.

They were nearly at their destination when Lawrence’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen, then shot a quick look at her before answering. “What’s up?”

Patti’s voice came through, anxious and breathless. “Lawrence, Moses is flying back to Frostford tonight! He agreed to see me before his flight. Can you come with me?”

Lawrence’s voice dropped. “Didn’t he just get here today? He’s leaving already?”

“I’m not sure what’s going on,” Patti said, her voice trembling. “But if he wants to see me, that means he’s considering taking me as his student. Lawrence, I can’t let this chance slip by.”

Lawrence looked at Theresia, torn and unable to answer right away.

Patti’s voice softened, sounding small and hurt. “Lawrence, am I putting you in a bad spot? It’s Theresia’s birthday, isn’t it? I shouldn’t have asked you to leave her alone. Never mind, maybe this is just how things are meant to be for me. My dream is probably over. Just spend the evening with her and tell her happy birthday from me, okay?”

The guilt hit Lawrence hard. He’d promised to help Patti, promised to help her become Moses’s student. How could he back out now? Patti was the woman he loved, the one he had sworn to always protect. How could he hesitate, even for a second? All for Theresia’s birthday?

Did he really forget she was blind? Did he not remember that she couldn’t see a thing?

Theresia tried to tell herself not to care anymore, but her heart wouldn’t listen. Pain rushed through her, sharp and overwhelming, sinking deep into her bones.

She climbed out of the car. It sped away, leaving her standing in the cold wind. Her hair whipped around her face as she shivered, staring after him until he disappeared. Her fingers felt icy.

Goodbye, Lawrence, she thought.

Then, suddenly, a familiar voice called her name from behind. “Theresia.”
