He Gave Her My Eyes A Story of Final Sight novel Chapter 29

Patti froze, her thoughts swirling in confusion. What did he mean, the game was over?

Moses didn’t linger. He turned around, ready to leave.

Patti hurried after him, managing a strained smile. “Moses, what are you talking about? What game?”

Moses pulled his hat onto his head and smoothed his beard, his face completely serious. “Well, since you look so clueless, I’ll just say it straight. My last student finally accepted me a couple of days ago. She’s the one who told me to come here today for a free meal, so here I am.”

Patti stared at him, sure she must have misheard.

Moses was a legend in the art world, his talent unrivaled. Three years ago, after more than a decade without taking on any apprentices, he had suddenly announced he would choose one last student. But for three years, he had picked no one. Patti had always assumed he couldn’t find anyone good enough. She’d been sure she was the front-runner. Even before this phone call, she thought the spot was hers.

Now she couldn’t accept what she was hearing. “You asked to meet just to mess with me? You never planned to take me on as your student?”

Moses, famous for being difficult, didn’t bother hiding his irritation. “Do you think I’ll accept just anyone? Patti, your art isn’t even close to my student’s. If she hadn’t told me to meet you, I wouldn’t have bothered coming at all.”

Patti’s anger flared. Before she could say anything else, Lawrence stepped in and blocked Moses’s way. “Moses, if you take Patti as your student, I’m willing to give you a hundred million to support your next exhibition.”

Lawrence didn’t let her finish. “Patti, there’s no use thinking about what might have been. I married Theresia, and I owe her a lifetime of responsibility. She’s having my baby.”

He’d waited so long for this child. As much as he cared about Patti, he was honestly excited about becoming a father. Just the thought of it softened something inside him.

But that wasn’t what Patti wanted to hear. In her mind, Lawrence was supposed to belong to her, always ready whenever she called. Seeing him start to pull away was something she couldn’t accept. She refused to let it happen. All the attention, all the love—she wanted it all for herself.

Her eyes darkened with anger. It was all because of that baby Theresia was carrying. That child shouldn’t exist.
