He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 236

Alistair casually pulled a sanitizing wipe from the dispenser and began wiping his hands. His tone remained perfectly mild. "What kind of medicine was she buying?"

Macy thought he was just refusing to admit it. She hadn't pegged him for such a hypocrite.

She tightened her lips and took a deep breath. "Swelling ointment for... that area! I know Juniper. She bottles everything up and is too embarrassed to say anything. She probably went to a different hospital just so you wouldn't find out. You're honestly crossing a line. You aren't even married yet!"

Alistair's hand paused. He instantly recalled what Director Vance had mentioned earlier that day—that the international specialists were arriving tomorrow to treat Walter Lane.

It was a transaction.

He lowered his eyes. In a fraction of a second, all the pieces fell perfectly into place.

"I understand. Thank you for telling me. I'll be more careful next time."

Macy exhaled a massive sigh of relief. As a young woman, bringing something like this up was incredibly awkward, but this was Juniper. And Alistair was different.

Perhaps the heartbreak of the past could finally find some closure in the present.

She looked down. "You look so much like my brother. Do you want to see a picture of him? He was deeply in love with Juniper, but he never confessed his feelings. The moment my brother found out he was never going to walk again, he buried every emotion he had."

She dug through her bag and pulled out a photograph of Cillian. It was obvious she carried it everywhere; she clearly adored her late brother.

Alistair glanced at the photo. The young man in the school uniform was smiling with a gentle, disarming warmth.

It exuded an unmistakable aura of bright, untainted youth.

But her brother had died at nineteen. Macy could only dream of what he would look like now, what kind of career he would have pursued if he had survived.

Alistair tossed the used wipe into the trash. "You two must have been very close."

"Of course we were. I used to pray every day that Juniper would become my sister-in-law. If it hadn't been for that..."

She clamped her mouth shut before finishing the thought. "Anyway, I'll definitely be at your wedding."
