He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 257

Lydia had already changed into a different outfit—a graceful, floor-length ivory gown. She looked perfectly elegant and poised, completely oblivious to what had just transpired. Confusion filled her eyes. "What happened?"

The guests exchanged uncertain glances.

They didn't know the full truth, but one thing was certain: there was absolutely nothing innocent about whatever was going on between Nelson and Juniper!

Lydia approached Nelson with a gentle smile, but the moment she met his eyes, she froze in terror.

Her nails dug into her palms. She instantly knew that the stunt she pulled had thoroughly disgusted him.

A suffocating tightness gripped her chest. Nelson was a deeply emotionally stunted man; earning his favor was incredibly difficult.

But once you earned his resentment, repairing the relationship was nearly impossible.

She lowered her eyelashes. It had been a massive risk tonight, but someone had clearly set her up, forcing her into such a desperate move.

Thankfully, Nelson was still on her side.

She forced her lips to curve upward. With so many eyes on them, she couldn't afford to show any weakness.

Stepping closer, she murmured in a voice only he could hear, "Nelson, I didn't have a choice..."

She sounded pitiful, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.

But Nelson wasn't buying it. "You didn't have a choice, yet you were smart enough to find a scapegoat. I have to admit, Lydia, I never realized just how capable you were during all those times you claimed you 'didn't have a choice.'"

The blood drained from Lydia's face. Her fists clenched tight. She knew how intensely protective the old Nelson had been of her, but after tonight, that perfect, unblemished image of hers had cracked. The next time he had to choose between them, he might not blindly take her side.

Regret washed over her. She shouldn't have let her anger at Juniper drive her to seek revenge. None of this would have happened.

But it was too late for regrets. She still had to face the crowd. Any moment now, someone was bound to ask her what had happened.
