He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 269

Her eyes remained completely glazed over. She reached out and grabbed Beatrice's hand, desperately trying to warm it, but it was horrifyingly cold.

Juniper breathed onto the hand over and over again, but there was no response.

Brooks started crying again. Both of them were slumped on the ground.

The police officers forced the crowd back, stopping them from gawking at the scene.

Juniper's body went entirely limp, until she finally collapsed onto the dirt beside her mother.

When she woke up, she was in a hospital.

The room smelled sharply of bleach and antiseptics. A police officer stood by her bed, explaining the situation. "Your mother's body has been sent to the crematorium. Your brother's condition was very unstable, so we had someone take him home. How are you feeling? Try not to let the grief consume you. It's a terrible situation, but you still have to look toward the future."

Juniper sat up rigidly, her hands gripping the thin blankets. Her face was ashen.

"Did you find the man who scammed her?"

The officer sighed heavily. "In a small town like ours, we don't have the jurisdiction or resources for that. The suspect transferred the money and fled the country on the same day. He's completely off the grid now, and honestly, he'll probably never come back. The money is gone. I'm so sorry."

Juniper's lips pulled into a strained, agonizing smile.

She leaned back against the pillows, her face a mask of utter exhaustion.

The officer tried to comfort her again. "Don't blame your mother. She just wanted to see you get better. Honestly, I've known her for years. She used to brag to everyone about how capable and smart you were. She truly believed that once you were 'cured,' you would find a great job, settle down, get married, and have kids. Juniper, I've heard rumors about what happened to you. Look, you might think she was foolish, but you were the perfect daughter for so long. When a psychiatrist dragged you back here kicking and screaming, of course she believed you were sick. Her greatest wish was to fix you. I don't know where she got that two million dollars, but she didn't spend a single cent of it on herself. She even drained her own life savings to add to it. She's gone now... try to let go of the anger and live your life."

Tears began streaming down Juniper's face again. She buried her face in her hands, entirely broken.

How could she not hate her? The resentment tore at her very soul. She wanted to scream. Why did Beatrice have to die right now?

Why did she have to die right after Juniper had said those unforgivable things to her?
