His back still needed to be dressed, but in a masochistic streak, he couldn't be bothered with it and headed straight to the Thorne residence.
Josie Saint was holding the cat. When Nelson took off his jacket, she saw the fresh blood seeping through his shirt and shrieked in terror, "Dad, you're bleeding! I'm so sorry, woo woo woo."
Nelson's face was a bit pale, but he reached out and ruffled her hair. "It's fine. It doesn't hurt."
Josie was frantic and immediately called Lydia Thorne downstairs.
Lydia came down in her sleepwear—an oversized silk slip dress that barely covered the tops of her thighs, showing off her long legs. It was an undeniably seductive look. At least, in the eyes of most men, the visual impact would be devastating.
She genuinely didn't seem to know Nelson was there, given the late hour, and looked slightly embarrassed. "Nelson? What are you doing here?"
Nelson glanced at her outfit, frowned, and immediately averted his eyes. "Josie said the kitten wasn't feeling well, so I called the vet."
Lydia seemed to feel that going back upstairs to change now would look too deliberate, so she continued walking down in the slip.
"You didn't have to bother the vet. I had someone look at her this afternoon. It's just a reaction to her vaccines. She's lost her appetite, but she'll be fine by tomorrow. Josie just loves the kitten too much and wouldn't let go of her, which is why she called you."
Josie was still clutching the kitten, her eyes rimmed with red. "You gave her to me, Dad. I want her to grow up safe and healthy."
A faint smile ghosted across Nelson's lips, and he pinched her cheek. "She'll grow up just fine."
Lydia walked over and sat down. Seeing the blood on his back, she asked with concern, "Did you skip changing your bandages tonight? I'll call the doctor over to redress it for you."
"No need."
He rejected her instantly, standing up. "It's nothing serious."
