The woman moved to slam the door, but Juniper forcefully shoved her way inside. The layout of the apartment was exactly as she remembered. The paintings on the walls were still the ones Professor York had personally hunted down at antique markets.
But many other items were missing, making the place feel hollow and stripped.
Juniper's brow furrowed. "I am a distant relative of this family. If you don't tell me where Professor York is right now, I'm calling the police."
The women gathered around the mahjong table stood up immediately upon hearing this, speaking in thick regional accents. "Oh my, aren't you a piece of work, coming in here looking for trouble?"
Juniper abruptly pulled out the dagger she had brought and pointed it directly at them. "I have a psychiatric record. If I kill you, I won't go to jail."
The moment the words 'psychiatric record' left her lips, the women panicked and stumbled backward in fear.
They started shoving the woman who had opened the door. "Tell her! Didn't you say you wheeled him outside to get some sun?"
The woman, Wanda Jones, was a caregiver hired by the other university professors to look after Professor York.
But the professors were always busy and rarely visited.
Even Master Zale only dropped by once every six months. No one had any idea what this woman was doing behind closed doors.
Wanda's face drained of color. She frantically stammered, "I just wheeled him out for some sun and forgot to bring him back in! I'll go get him right now!"
The other women from the mahjong table bolted for the door, Juniper tailing them closely with the dagger in hand.
They ran incredibly fast, cursing over their shoulders as they fled. "Psycho!"
Wanda led the way to Professor York. He had been left directly under the blazing sun, his forehead slick with sweat.
He was nearing seventy years old. A single bad fall could be fatal, let alone suffering from a stroke.
Professor York and his wife had never had children, but they had shared a deeply loving marriage. It was heartbreaking to see such a brilliant, respected man bullied by a caregiver in his twilight years.
A rush of pure fury surged to Juniper's head. She marched forward and kicked Wanda hard to the ground. "It's scorching hot out here, and you leave my teacher baking in the sun while you sit inside in the AC playing mahjong? I'm telling you right now, you're fired! And you better bring back every single thing you stole and sold from his house!"
