Juniper was stunned. This was a deep, dark society secret.
Yet, Alistair's tone remained utterly placid. "After my parents married, my mom kept up her affair with Silas. But secrets always come to light. Yvonne found out. Naturally, she couldn't swallow that kind of humiliation. After all, Silas had gone to great lengths for my mother—shoving her onto my dad and funneling money her way. And at that time, my mom was pregnant."
Juniper lifted a hand to massage her temples. Wait, did that mean Alistair and Nelson might be brothers?
Alistair pulled the car over to the side of the quiet road. Resting his head against his hand, he continued to unravel the rest of the story. "She was pregnant with twins. My mom had been with Silas for years, and she knew her babies would be in danger. She wanted the doctor who delivered them to secretly send them away. She had already bought a secluded house in another city. But Yvonne found out and intervened. One of the babies was lost, later adopted by a man surnamed Xavier in a remote village. The man claimed the boy was his own biological son and named him Cillian Xavier."
"I was lucky enough to be recovered, but my mom lived in constant terror. She knew Yvonne wouldn't let her off the hook, and she was terrified Yvonne would expose the affair to my dad. My dad had been raising another man's child, and his wife was someone else's mistress—he knew absolutely nothing from start to finish. Knowing Yvonne was about to strike, my mom urged my dad to take her on a vacation. My dad dropped everything at work, and the three of us were so happy that day."
As for what happened next, it was the version of the story Juniper already knew. Both adults had died in the accident, but the child survived and was generously sponsored by Eleanor Saint.
"Years ago, Yvonne went to that village because of Eleanor. The moment she saw Cillian, she immediately recognized him as the surviving twin. After that, Cillian was crippled and plunged into a deep depression. Eventually, Cillian died because of Yvonne's son. Juniper, you played a part in this tragedy too, didn't you?"
Juniper clamped a hand over her mouth, her instincts screaming at her to open the car door and run.
Her head throbbed violently. She felt nauseous, suffocatingly sick.
Alistair's emotions remained unruffled. "But I don't blame you. You and I are merely pawns in this twisted game of chess. Yvonne traded a bastard's life to save her own biological son. It was the proudest move she ever made. Neither of us had a choice."
