Juniper stood up and offered him a faint smile. "I just take a while to warm up to people. I'm going to bed."
She turned to head toward her assigned room, only to be yanked backward with terrifying force. A second later, a cloth drenched in chemicals was clamped tightly over her nose and mouth. She struggled violently for a moment before her body went completely limp.
All trace of the smile vanished from Leo's face. Once he was certain she was unconscious, he slowly released his grip.
But as he looked up, his eyes locked with Reggie's. Reggie had just stepped out for a glass of water.
Reggie was slightly buzzed from the wine, his vision a little blurry, but the moment he registered the scene in front of him, his eyes widened in sheer terror. Before he could even react, Leo was closing the distance with long, predatory strides.
Instinct screamed at Reggie to retreat and lock the door, but the chemical-soaked cloth was swiftly clamped over his face, too.
Beneath Leo's boyish, collegiate exterior lay a body coiled with explosive power.
He leaned against the doorframe, taking a slow, steady breath. He waited for the night to deepen before dragging both Reggie and Juniper's unconscious bodies away.
Recent heavy rains had left the mountain roads slick with mud.
Leo drove straight to the vicinity of Cillian Xavier's grave. He callously shoved Reggie off the nearby cliff, flawlessly staging a fatal, accidental fall. Then, he dumped Juniper a short distance from Cillian's headstone.
The drugs were still surging through her system. When she was abandoned in the dirt, she was completely comatose, unable to move a muscle.
By the time Leo finished and returned to the house, it was five in the morning.
He scrubbed his shoes meticulously until not a single speck of mud remained.
When the old lady woke up, neither Juniper nor Reggie was anywhere to be found. Only Leo was there, seemingly just getting out of bed.
Leaning on her cane, she called out to him, "Have you seen Juniper and Reggie?"
Leo shook his head. Seeing the anxiety on his grandmother's face, he quickly offered comfort. "I'll go ask the villagers. Maybe Juniper and Reggie went out to check out the vegetable patches."
The locals grew plenty of crops; if you needed anything, you just left some money and picked it yourself.
But the old lady still looked sick with worry. "Juniper didn't seem to get along very well with the people around here."
