Juniper's mind was still in a complete fog. When she had lost consciousness, she had been certain she was dead. Yet here she was, waking up in the familiar cemetery. This wasn't the first time she had been abducted and dumped here. The last time she was kidnapped, she had woken up in this exact spot. Had it been Leo back then, too?
Before she could even begin to demand answers, news of the old lady's death shattered her world. Even Reggie had perished.
Leo had sustained critical injuries and had just been rolled out of the emergency room.
Within the Saint family, Leo had always played the part of the unambitious slacker. He had never once asked for a position at Saint Group. On paper, he was the absolute last person to have any vested interest in the family's internal power struggles.
Arthur Saint was practically vibrating with rage. He violently hurled a glass across the hospital room. "You're awake? Then tell me exactly what the hell happened!"
Leo, nursing several broken ribs, coughed weakly. A sickly flush colored his pale cheeks. "Grandfather... Grandmother took Juniper to the countryside to relax. But when we woke up yesterday morning, Juniper was gone. Grandmother urged me to help find her. I wasn't familiar with those mountain roads... I'm so sorry."
His face was the picture of devastation and guilt, though he had barely scraped by with his own life.
As for the old lady, a shard of the windshield had pierced her heart instantly. She had only had a few months left to live anyway, but this had stolen even that.
Juniper. It all came back to Juniper.
Arthur took a deep breath, turning to the man beside him. "Get rid of Juniper."
The man nodded immediately and stepped out to make a phone call.
Meanwhile, the news reached Nelson.
He had been out on vacation with Josie, genuinely trying to clear his head. The moment he heard about his grandmother's death, he called Quinn Fletcher and ordered him to protect Juniper at all costs. He knew without a doubt that his grandfather's tolerance for her had officially reached zero.
Staring blankly at the snow-capped mountains, Nelson felt his stomach drop. He scooped Josie up, sprinted down the mountain, cashed in every favor he had to charter a helicopter, and was back in the city in under five hours.
Quinn had already placed the investigation report on Nelson's desk. "Ms. Lane likely went to Cillian Xavier's grave early in the morning without telling the old lady. This caused the old lady to panic and force Leo to drive out and search for her. It's been raining heavily, and those roads are notoriously treacherous."
