But it was glaringly obvious that Juniper was the exact opposite of her. Juniper had been targeted by those very people, completely cornered and systematically destroyed.
Jasmine's paintbrush paused as she observed the iron-clad resilience hardening Juniper's features, despite the lack of any outward fragility. A strange sense of camaraderie flared within her, and she began to speak unprompted.
"Finn's mother was a highly renowned surgeon, though she rarely takes patients anymore. When I was brought back to the Lawrence family, the old man, honoring the life debt my family owed them, arranged for Finn and me to marry. But his parents always despised me. They knew exactly how depraved and uncontrollable Finn truly was, and they were utterly convinced I'd be tossed out onto the street in no time."
Her tone was terrifyingly flat, entirely devoid of emotion, as she casually switched to a different color of paint. "I got pregnant that year. Finn was out of town on business. His mother threw photos of him in bed with another woman right in my face. I calmly booked an abortion. She was the one who performed the surgery. From beginning to end, Finn had no idea we lost a child. His own mother ripped it out of me, and she was the one who signed the consent forms."
Juniper's head snapped up, staring at Jasmine in complete horror.
Jasmine's voice remained unsettlingly calm. "She probably thought I'd shatter. Thought I'd crawl away from the Lawrence family covered in scars. But she was dead wrong. I never wanted Finn's love. I wanted Finn to be a weapon I could wield. She doesn't understand her own son, and she definitely doesn't understand what I mean to him. I moved out here. Over the years, she's introduced him to endless divorced socialites, desperately hoping he'll divorce me. But I coaxed Finn into signing over all his corporate shares ages ago. If he divorces me, I get everything. The entire Lawrence family belongs to me."
The heir to a massive dynasty, voluntarily signing over his shares?
It sounded like absolute fiction. If it hadn't come directly from Jasmine's mouth, Juniper never would have believed it.
Jasmine set down her brush and met Juniper's gaze. "Finn is incredibly easy to manipulate. Or rather, I've known since we were kids that he wasn't normal, and that I could use him. He's always been perfectly obedient. Whatever I tell him to do, he does. He's got a mistress tucked away right now, and I could snap my fingers and make him crawl back to me, make him commit. But I don't want to. Because that's not what I'm after."
