Clarissa looked at her, her expression unreadable.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt your family dinner."
Scarlett opened the small gate and walked over, her eyes showing a sense of calm acceptance.
"You're not. We do this all the time. It's no interruption."
"Have you eaten? If you don't mind, you can stay for some barbecue. We hired a chef from a high-end steakhouse, he's actually really good."
Faced with this gentle, welcoming version of Scarlett, Clarissa felt genuinely overwhelmed.
"I... I shouldn't. It's a family gathering, it wouldn't be right."
Despite her words, her eyes kept darting past Scarlett to look at Dawn.
After all, they shared the same blood. Seeing her niece looking so healthy, bright, and adorable made her heart ache with the sudden urge to go over, pick her up, and just hold her for a minute.
But Scarlett was married to Julian now. They were two entirely separate families, with far too much bad blood between them...
Deciding it was best to keep her distance, she simply shoved the large bag containing her collection into Scarlett's hands.
"I won't come in. These are all the earrings and brooches I've collected over the years. I want Dawn to have them for her second birthday."
Scarlett took the bag. It was surprisingly heavy, and just from glancing inside, she could tell there were a lot of jewelry boxes in there.
She remembered very clearly how obsessed Clarissa had been with her jewelry collection. This had to be a staggering amount of pieces.
She used to value these things more than her own life. Why was she suddenly giving them all away to Dawn?
This was an incredibly valuable gift. A massive chunk of her life savings had gone into funding this collection.
"This... this is too much."
"Dawn is way too young for any of this right now. You should keep it."
Scarlett immediately tried to hand the bag back.
"As for the Flynn family... everyone has their own destiny. Whatever happens, happens. I just hope they can find a way to save themselves."
She looked at Scarlett, hesitating for a moment before finally speaking in a low voice.
"I know you have a lot of hatred for our family, especially for him. But honestly... he's not entirely irredeemable."
"If you're really planning on going after the Flynn family with everything you've got, I just hope... for the sake of the time you were married, that you'll leave him an out in the end."
Scarlett knew that of everyone in that family, Clarissa was the one who saw things the most clearly, even if she had also been the most coldly pragmatic.
She used to only care about her own bottom line, completely apathetic to everyone else's struggles.
But now, alongside her sharp clarity, there was a genuine warmth and humanity to her.
Scarlett nodded.
"Okay. I hear you."
