"I've given him plenty of warnings. If he actually listens, I think he'll pull back before it's too late."
"But if he refuses to listen, there's nothing more I can do. As for me, if I genuinely wanted to destroy him, the Flynn Group wouldn't even exist anymore."
After everything that had happened, Clarissa still had no idea who exactly was backing Scarlett behind the scenes, but she knew perfectly well that those weren't empty threats.
"I understand. I just hope you can show him some mercy. Don't push him over the edge."
"Please keep those safe for me, and give them to Dawn when she's older. I hope she likes them."
With that, she gently pushed the heavy bag back into Scarlett's arms.
She stole one last glance toward the yard where Dawn was playing.
Just then, Julian walked over, carrying the little girl in his arms.
Dawn had her arms wrapped securely around his neck, her big, round eyes darting around curiously.
She stared at Clarissa with a bright, intelligent gaze. It was obvious just by looking at her that she was a remarkably smart and spirited child.
Julian pointed gently at Clarissa.
"Dawn, this is your Aunt Clarissa. Say hi."
Dawn immediately piped up.
"Auntie! Auntie!"
It was just a simple word, but it made Clarissa freeze completely.
She looked at the little girl, involuntarily reaching her arms out, her voice breaking slightly.
"Can Auntie give you a hug? Is that okay?"
Dawn hesitated for a second, instinctively looking at Julian for approval. Once she saw him nod, she happily leaned forward into Clarissa's arms.
Clarissa pulled the little girl into a tight embrace.
She could feel how much Dawn had grown since the last time she had seen her. She was taller, heavier, more solid.
Dawn looked at her curiously, and as their eyes met, they both smiled at the exact same time.
The heavy burden Clarissa had been carrying seemed to vanish entirely, replaced by a deep, instinctual bond of family.
"Can I take a picture with her? Just for a keepsake?"
Julian leaned in to take a look, clearly bewildered.
Her tone was quiet.
"She told me she's joining a convent. She's leaving her old life behind, so she has no use for any of this anymore. She wants Dawn to have it as a wedding gift when she's older."
Julian and Jacqueline both stared at her in shock, speaking in unison.
"A convent? You're kidding, right?"
Scarlett nodded. She was just about to say something else when she suddenly noticed a figure approaching their property from down the road.
It was a man dressed entirely in black, wearing a baseball cap pulled low and carrying a long, heavy duffel bag slung over his shoulder.
One look at him, and an intense wave of dread washed over her.
As she watched, the man suddenly unzipped the duffel bag, reaching inside as if to pull something out.
In a split second, her heart slammed into her throat, and she screamed,
"Watch out!"
