Desperate to hide his surging emotions, Zachary picked up his chopsticks and began eating voraciously.
It tasted exactly like his childhood.
It tasted like his mother.
He ate like a starving man while Jacqueline sat beside him, watching with total adoration. She carefully peeled the red eggs for him, placing them gently into his bowl.
For a fleeting moment, he felt like that little boy again. The massive, gaping hole in his soul—the one he had spent decades trying to ignore—was finally mending.
He demolished the sweet rice balls, the ravioli, and the eggs in record time.
Seeing that he still had the same ravenous appetite from his youth, Jacqueline beamed with pride.
She looked around at the guests. "My son always loved to eat! When he was little, he could put away three bowls of rice in one sitting! Look at him now, still eating like he's terrified there won't be enough for seconds!"
Her booming, joyful laughter was infectious, and the rest of the room joined in.
Scarlett checked her watch and leaned in. "Mom, it's getting close to dinner. We should start heading to the hotel for the reception."
Jacqueline smacked her forehead. "Right! I was so excited I almost forgot. Let's go, let's go! Scarlett, call your in-laws and tell them to get there early."
Elara and Dominic Croft were originally supposed to be at the house, but Madeleine Dawson's condition had taken a slight turn for the worse, so they had rushed to the hospital instead.
Scarlett immediately dialed Elara.
"Mom? How is Grandma doing?"
