Scarlett just smiled up at him, saying nothing as she turned back to help coordinate the guests.
Jacqueline was practically glowing. She was entirely unrecognizable from her usual sharp, business-minded self. She hovered around Zachary the entire time, clutching his arm tightly, as if terrified he would vanish into thin air if she let go for even a second.
Being a mother herself now, Scarlett understood exactly how Jacqueline felt.
She and Julian systematically ushered the guests out to their cars to head to the hotel, deliberately leaving Jacqueline and Zachary behind to go check out the room she had prepared for him.
Scarlett knew they needed this private moment.
Because sooner or later, her mother was going to discover his secret.
—
Jacqueline pulled Zachary down the hall and pushed open the door to his new bedroom.
The moment she learned he was alive, she had hired contractors to gut and redesign the space entirely.
Because he had obsessed over model airplanes as a boy, she had ordered a magnificent glass display case built into the wall, entirely filled with high-end, intricately detailed model planes.
Because he had adored Doraemon, she had tracked down every variation of the character she could find, blanketing the desk in plushies and figurines.
When Zachary stepped inside, he felt like he had walked straight into a time capsule of his childhood.
The bed was exactly the same style as his old one, just upgraded to a king size. The desk sat in the exact same corner. The layout, the color scheme, even the curtains were virtually identical to the room he had lost so long ago.
The only difference was the mountain of toys.
It was everything he had desperately begged for as a child and never received.
Clearly, Jacqueline was trying to aggressively make up for the past, giving him the childhood he had been robbed of.
