Yardley's brow furrowed in utter exhaustion.
He didn't even bother to turn around.
"I'm really exhausted, Sylvia. If you want to jump... jump."
With that, he walked out and slammed the door behind him. This time, he walked away cleanly, without a second glance.
Inside the room, the three women stared at the closed door, then at each other. Finally, Corinne and Gwen's eyes locked onto Sylvia.
Sylvia had one leg slung over the window ledge, the other dangling precariously.
She made the mistake of looking down. It was a twenty-story drop.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Terrified, she immediately yanked her leg back inside, slid down the wall until she hit the carpet, and buried her face in her hands, sobbing pathetically.
Gwen had completely lost her nerve. Watching her daughter cry, she broke down in tears as well.
Corinne closed her eyes, her temples throbbing violently. She didn't even have the strength to walk out the door.
She took several deep, shuddering breaths, trying to cool the boiling rage in her veins.
"Sylvia, there's no one else here. Tell me and your mother the truth. What the hell happened with that baby?"
Sylvia looked up, her tear-streaked face twisted in misery.
"Aunt Corinne, if I tell you, will you help me? Yardley abandoned me. You're the only one left—"
Corinne fought to keep her voice steady.
"Just tell us what happened!"
Sylvia let out a heavy sigh, sniffing loudly as she tried to compose herself.
"Fine. I'll tell you. Here's what happened..."
"Julian and I were married for five years, and he refused to touch me. I couldn't get pregnant, and the Croft family was pressuring me constantly.
I panicked. So... so I called my cousin Kane Stetson from Southeast Asia."
Gwen flinched as if she'd been struck.
"What?! You contacted that psychopath?!"
Sylvia immediately burst into tears again, defensive and panicked.
