Scarlett realized she was talking to a brick wall. Arguing with someone this arrogant was pointless.
Just then, the ambulance arrived. She and Julian hurried over to help load Madeleine onto the stretcher.
By now, Madeleine had regained consciousness. Even as she was being wheeled in, she gripped their hands with desperate strength. "You two have to protect The Breeze Pagoda... no matter what. Promise me."
Scarlett and Julian nodded in unison. "We promise, Grandma. We won't let anything happen to it."
The ambulance sped off with Elara riding in the back.
Dominic pulled the two of them aside and lowered his voice. "Just hold the line a little longer. My team has already coordinated with the authorities in both Bay City and Sutton City. They're on their way."
"They should be here in about half an hour. Whatever you do, do not let them resume construction before then. Once the joint task force arrives, they'll take severe legal action against Veronica for what she pulled tonight."
He patted his son's shoulder. "I'm counting on you two for the next thirty minutes."
"I'm not comfortable letting your mother handle the hospital by herself. There's a lot of paperwork she's not used to, so I'm going to head over there."
With that, Dominic quickly got into his car and sped off.
Watching him leave, Julian and Scarlett exchanged a glance.
But when they turned around, Veronica was already screaming at her crew to turn the machines back on.
Seeing her absolute refusal to listen to reason, Scarlett's blood boiled. She marched right up to the worker reaching for the excavator controls and snapped, "You nearly killed someone just now, and you're still going to dig? Are you really willing to go to jail over a paycheck?"
