In the days following the successful signing ceremony, Scarlett operated like a tightly wound bowstring, pouring every ounce of her energy into her work.
Designing was much like writing; it required immense mental focus and surgical precision. She couldn't afford a single distraction.
Thankfully, with Jacqueline Langley anchoring things at home, Scarlett was able to fully dedicate herself to the studio.
She was determined to use undeniable results to repay the heavy trust Julian had placed in her.
It was late evening. The office lights glowed a stark white against the dark sky outside. Most of the staff had already gone home, but Scarlett was still glued to her desk, completely immersed in a draft.
Julian walked over, his long fingers gently tapping the edge of her desk twice.
"Take a break, Scarlett. No overtime tonight."
He paused, a faint smile creeping into his voice. "Come on. Let's go grab something good at the mall. And while we're there... we can check out the baby stores."
Scarlett blinked, tearing her eyes away from the blueprints. It took her a second to refocus on him.
"Oh? Why the sudden trip?"
Julian nodded. "If I remember correctly, Dawn and Caleb share the exact same birthday, don't they?"
"By my count, next week is their official 100-day celebration."
Catching the brief, shattering flash of pain in Julian's eyes at the mention of the date, Scarlett's heart gave a hard tug. Realization hit her, quickly followed by a rush of guilt.
She immediately stood up, hastily smoothing out her clothes.
"Look at me, completely losing track of time. I can't believe I forgot such a major milestone... Thank God you remembered."
She hesitated, asking gently, "So you want to go to the baby store... to pick out a gift for Caleb?"
At the sound of Caleb's name, Julian's fingers curled slightly at his sides.
He lowered his eyes, his long lashes concealing his turbulent emotions. Slowly, he shook his head, a faint, melancholic smile pulling at his lips.
Scarlett immediately made a decision, shoving her drafts aside. "Alright, you're the boss. Talia was just telling me about a new Thai place at the mall with amazing reviews. Let's go try it."
A warm, gentle smile touched Julian's lips. "Sounds perfect. Lead the way."
Scarlett led him down to the underground garage and unlocked her sleek new car.
The engine purred to life, and the car glided smoothly onto the road. Seeing how effortlessly she handled the wheel—switching lanes and taking corners with absolute confidence despite having just gotten the car a few days ago—Julian's eyes filled with admiration.
"So... how does it handle?"
Scarlett beamed, genuinely thrilled. "It's absolutely perfect! Bill mentioned you helped pick it out? You have amazing taste. Thank you so much."
Julian kept his eyes on the road ahead, his voice low and soothing. "As long as you like it, that's all that matters."
Scarlett nodded enthusiastically, her fingers lightly tracing the leather steering wheel, her affection for the car obvious.
