"Don't stamp that! The settlement was tampered with! There's a problem!" Talia shouted, frantically banging on the glass to stop the clerk.
Her outburst startled both Scarlett and Yardley. Frowning, the clerk slid the paperwork back across the counter.
Talia snatched up the agreement, her eyes zeroing in on the custody clause. Her blood boiled instantly. She rolled up the papers and violently hurled them right at Yardley's chest.
"You absolute piece of trash, Yardley! I knew it! I knew you wouldn't agree to this divorce so easily. This was your trap!"
She whirled around to Scarlett, furious. "Scarlett, we have to draft a new one! This bastard played you! He messed with the wording in the custody section. If this thing had gone through, custody would have defaulted back to him! It basically says you can't even visit Dawn without his explicit permission!"
Talia practically hyperventilated. "Thank god I'm a genius and sent pictures to Chatwin! Otherwise, you would have just signed your baby away!"
The world spun, going dark around the edges of Scarlett's vision.
Yardley, completely bewildered by the sudden attack, picked up the scattered papers and read them carefully. He had been in such a numb daze earlier that he had just signed where he was told without reading a single word. Even now, he struggled to see what was wrong, but this was supposedly the exact document Scarlett's lawyers had heavily revised.
Guided by Talia's pointing finger, Scarlett read the altered clause. Her vision tinted red.
Scarlett glared at him, her eyes practically shooting daggers. "Still trying to lie your way out of it? It's right here in black and white, complete with your signature. And you expect me to believe you didn't touch it? Do you think I'm an idiot?"
Yardley was at a total loss. Desperate, he looked down at the signature she was pointing at. He stared at it for a few agonizing seconds before realization crashed over him, swiftly followed by a surge of pure fury.
His finger trembled as he pointed at the ink. "This isn't my handwriting. Clarissa signed this for me. Look closely—the stroke in the middle character is slightly different from how I write it. My sister must have switched the papers. I'm calling her right now to find out what the hell she did."
Frowning, Scarlett grabbed the paper back and inspected the signature. She had seen Yardley sign his name thousands of times; she would recognize his handwriting in her sleep. This signature was a near-perfect forgery, but upon closer inspection, the pressure and curves were indeed slightly off. Knowing Clarissa often signed documents on Yardley's behalf at the office... it was entirely possible.
