Melanie's voice was casual, dripping with careless amusement. "Oh, that? I'm holding your kid. I told you to get a paternity test, but you kept dragging your feet about getting the kid from Scarlett. Yardley was seeing red. He roared into the receiver, "Where the hell did you take my daughter?! Why is it so loud?!"

"I'm at a club right now," Melanie replied breezily. "Thought I'd let your daughter soak up some of the vibes. Get her some musical culture."

"I told you to calm down. It's fine. A baby crying a little isn't going to kill her. Let her cry!"
