"First, tell me what exactly happened."
"Who did this to you? Sylvia, how did you end up like this?"
Yardley's eyes were filled with absolute heartbreak.
Looking at her face—a face that still held the traces of the little girl he grew up with—a sharp ache twisted in his chest.
Once upon a time, she was like his favorite little sister. He adored her. He used to give her all his snacks. He'd let her touch his prized model airplanes when no one else was allowed. He spoiled her, gave in to her tantrums, and personally helped her with her homework. Whenever he had a free moment, he spent it playing with her.
And now... she was standing in his home, beaten half to death, and he hadn't known a thing about it.
"I... I..."
Sylvia choked on her sobs. Seeing the pain in his eyes, she buried her face in his chest. "It was... it was Scarlett and Julian."
Yardley's body went completely rigid. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white, a freezing fury pooling in his eyes. "Keep talking."
"You hit Julian at the hospital that day, and I still had the video of them. They wanted revenge, so they... they sent Stellan after me."
Sylvia cried out the fabricated story, sobbing the entire time. "To force me to delete the video, they... they hired eight men to... to..."
She broke down completely, unable to finish the sentence.
She collapsed into his arms, sobbing so hard she was practically hyperventilating.
Yardley was shaking now, his suppressed rage exploding into a raging inferno.
He stood frozen, his eyes like daggers of pure ice.
Right then, Sylvia reached down and pulled her dress up.
