"I will always be your cousin. There will never be anything else between us!"
Sylvia's self-esteem shattered even further. Clutching her chest, she couldn't stop herself from screaming hysterically.
"Why? We have absolutely no blood ties! I was just your aunt's adopted daughter!"
"Yardley, you know better than anyone how much I love you. I'd do anything for you! If you wanted, I'd be your dog, your secret lover, even just someone to keep your bed warm at night! I wouldn't complain... Just please, don't push me away. Can't you do that?"
Sylvia broke down crying, consumed by grievance. She couldn't understand it. Yardley had promised to treat her well, so why wouldn't he give her even a sliver of a chance?
If he hadn't rejected her the exact same way years ago, she wouldn't have rushed into that hasty marriage with Julian Croft, and none of the nightmares that followed would have happened.
Was she really that terrible?
She could clearly feel that Yardley cared about her. He obviously held a place for her in his heart.
So why???!!!
Sylvia's heart roared, tearing itself apart in agony.
Yet, Yardley remained entirely calm. He looked at her, sighed, and took off his suit jacket, draping it over her to completely cover her alluring figure.
"Don't ever dress like this again. Have you ever thought about the consequences if the wrong kind of man targeted you?"
Yardley shook his head, his eyes filled with helplessness.
Sylvia shivered violently and suddenly grabbed Yardley's hand. "Yardley, is it... is it because you're disgusted by me? Are you disgusted because I slept with Kane Stetson, had Caleb, and then... got framed by Scarlett and violated by those men... Is that it?"
"What, are you hoping to pass me around until all your friends have slept with me, just so you can stay the pure saint who never laid a finger on me?"
"Years ago, I listened to you! You said Julian was a great guy, so I found a way to get into Julian's bed. And look how that turned out! Look at me now—completely tossed aside by him!"
"You are the main reason my life is so miserable! Yardley, you are never allowed to abandon me! If you do, your conscience will haunt you forever!"
Sylvia shrieked in agony, her small face scrunched up in distress, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Seeing her in such a state, and remembering everything she had been through recently, Yardley's heart softened despite himself. He reached out and wiped the tears from her face.
"Come on, I'll take you home," Yardley said softly, pulling her up from the floor.
