Sniffling, Elara gripped Scarlett's hand tightly, her emotions spiraling out of control once again.
"Why?! Why do the Flynns and the Stetsons get to walk all over us like this?!"
"How dare Corinne demand astronomical wedding gifts from us, while being sickeningly stingy toward you?!"
"Scarlett, you're right. We can't hold this in anymore!"
"To hell with dignity, manners, and family reputation! Acting 'civilized' in front of trash like them is just a cruelty to ourselves!"
Elara suddenly stood up. The alcohol made her sway slightly, but her eyes were sharper and more resolved than ever.
"From now on, we join forces. We are going to make them pay! I want all of Bay City to know exactly how the Flynns and Stetsons pushed good, honest people past their breaking point! I'm going to ruin their reputations and make them regret they were ever born!"
Infected by her fierce energy, Scarlett stood up too. She raised her glass and clinked it hard against Elara's, the sharp ring echoing through the room.
"You're absolutely right, Sis! Starting today, we are no longer lambs waiting to be slaughtered. We're fighting back. We'll show them exactly what happens when you push nice people too far!"
"Cheers! To revenge!"
Elara threw her head back and drained her glass, radiating the bold swagger of a warrior.
"Cheers! To justice!"
Scarlett matched her energy, downing her wine.
"Cheers! How could you have a toast like this without me?!"
The private room door flew open with a bang. In walked Scarlett's mother, Jacqueline Langley.
Jacqueline had headed straight over the moment Elara texted her. She had actually arrived a while ago and stood outside the door listening, secretly wiping her own tears before finally gathering her composure and walking in.
Her foolish, foolish daughter. How could she have let the Flynns abuse her to that extent without ever saying a word? She had even fought against her own mother for Yardley's sake. What an idiot!
Thank God she had finally woken up and seen them for who they truly were!
