Corinne's finger practically poked Elara in the nose, her voice shrill. "I see exactly what's going on! You didn't come here for a charity gala, Elara. You came here specifically to crash my event!"
"I admit your family has deep pockets and a massive empire, but you can't just throw your weight around like this! Remember when your son Julian turned his back on us without a second thought? He threw Sylvia and her son out into the street, and we haven't even settled that score with him yet! But here you are, playing the victim and coming to our door to demand answers!"
Gwen's eyes immediately reddened. She managed to squeeze out a few fake tears, turning to the crowd of guests to sob her grievances.
"Ladies, please, you have to be the judge! Our Sylvia joined the Croft family for five years, enduring so much to give them a beautiful baby boy. And what happened? Julian divorced her out of nowhere! He didn't even want the kid! For a family with that kind of wealth, they tossed Sylvia a measly fifty million dollars in the divorce just to get rid of her like she was some beggar!"
"And that's not all! During their five-year marriage, he gave her nothing but the cold shoulder and barely ever came home, leaving her all alone. Even when Sylvia was at her most vulnerable, giving birth and going through her postpartum recovery, he wasn't there for a single day!"
"Our family swallowed our pride and kept our mouths shut to protect both families' reputations! We never said a bad word about the Crofts! But look at Elara! On the surface, she plays the part of the noble, detached professor, but behind closed doors... well, I think everyone can see what she really is today!"
Taking the cue, Sylvia expertly played her part. She threw herself in front of Gwen, covering her face and sobbing, her shoulders shaking pitifully. She played the role of the bullied young wife perfectly, drawing sympathetic looks from a few guests who didn't know the whole story.
Seeing this, Corinne jumped in to deliver another blow, her voice dripping with venom.
"My poor sister only has one precious daughter, and she was tormented by the Croft family until she was a shadow of her former self! And now, they're using their power to oppress us both! And look at this sharp-tongued woman—"
