"Let her go. Every time you force your way back into her life, you only cut her deeper and drain her further."
"We don't even know what's truly wrong with Dawn yet, and Scarlett is already at her breaking point. All she wants is to be free of this toxic marriage so you stop destroying each other. Are you really so selfish that you can't even grant her that?"
Julian tried to reason with him, but to Yardley, the words were like acid in his ears.
He let out a bitter, mocking laugh.
"Am I granting her freedom, or am I just stepping aside so you two can be together?"
"Stop sounding so damn noble, Julian! Don't think I don't know exactly what the deal is between you two!"
"Your entire family is suddenly bending over backward to befriend her, your parents are treating her like royalty—at the end of the day, it's all because you want the powerful backer standing behind her!"
"Do you honestly think I'm that stupid?"
Yardley aggressively tore down the facade, deliberately trying to provoke Julian to see his true reaction.
Julian's temper snapped. He grabbed Yardley by the lapels, shoving him back.
"You can insult me all you want, Yardley, but how dare you disrespect a woman who dedicated five years of her life entirely to you?"
"So in your eyes, Scarlett is just some cheap, opportunistic woman with no morals? No wonder she's completely dead inside when it comes to you! Even I'm entirely disgusted by you!"
"My parents care for her because they genuinely cherish her, and our families have history. We aren't trying to latch onto some imaginary 'backer' like you claim! She doesn't have the grand patron you're hallucinating about!"
"But if you really need to put a label on it, fine—I am her backer. I will not let you hurt her anymore, and I will not let your toxic family trample over her dignity. That is my bottom line!"
He roared the last sentence, finally unleashing the truth he had kept buried for so long.
To Julian, Scarlett was the little girl he had watched grow up.
