The world was a strange place. The more you wanted to avoid someone, the more likely you were to run directly into them.
As their eyes met, the atmosphere instantly grew tense and guarded.
Instinctively, Jacqueline and Elara stepped in front of the stroller, shielding Dawn as if the women across from them were a physical threat.
Standing behind the two mothers, Scarlett felt a wave of profound emotion. By blood, Elara was a complete stranger to Dawn, whereas everyone on the opposite side—save for Veronica—was family. Yet emotionally, Elara had known Dawn for such a short time and fiercely loved and protected her. Meanwhile, Dawn's supposed biological grandmother had never once looked at her with kindness or offered a single ounce of care.
The stark contrast in human nature was chilling. How could Scarlett not feel a deep-seated resentment?
Today was supposed to be a lovely outing now that Dawn was finally healthy. Scarlett absolutely refused to let this toxic family taint her daughter's day. Seeing that they were also here to eat, the very air in the restaurant felt contaminated.
She turned to Jacqueline and Elara. "Let's go somewhere else."
With that, she turned the stroller around to leave.
But before she could take a step, Corinne's venomous voice echoed behind her.
"Stop right there, Scarlett!"
"You malicious bitch! You drove my daughters into the ground! Don't you dare run—you owe them a massive apology!"
Seeing Scarlett triggered every ounce of Corinne's motherly rage. Completely ignoring the fact that they were in public, she launched her attack, pointing a trembling finger right at Scarlett.
Scarlett stared back, her tone frosty and unbothered. "Why would I? Explain exactly what happened that warrants an apology from me."
"You..." Corinne choked on her words, stunned for several seconds before finally exploding. "Stop playing stupid!"
"Look at them! They are covered in fresh cuts and old bruises—they can't even put clothes on properly! Don't tell me you didn't order those hits on them!"
"You black-hearted viper! If I had known how evil you were, I would have fought to the death to keep you out of my family!"
"Apologize to them right now! Or else I'll... I swear I'll..."
