Yardley froze for a second before abruptly pushing the woman away.
It was Sylvia.
She looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears. Just as he opened his mouth to snap at her, she shoved her sleeves up, revealing patches of dark, angry bruises covering her arms.
The furious reprimand died in Yardley’s throat.
His voice was dry and raspy. “How… how did this happen?”
Sylvia choked back a sob. “Scarlett paid off a gang of teenage girls to terrorize Melanie and me while we were in lockup!”
Yardley immediately shook his head. “Impossible. Scarlett wouldn't do something like that.”
“Even now, you’re still defending her!” Sylvia wept, looking at him with gut-wrenching betrayal. “Those girls admitted it to our faces! Scarlett hired them specifically to humiliate us!”
“Yardley, please! You have to finalize the divorce! If this keeps going, she’s going to kill us all!” she pleaded, grabbing his arm tightly.
He stared at her bruised skin, a heavy silence settling over him.
After a long moment, he spoke slowly. “The problem is, now that I’m ready to sign, she suddenly says she’s in no rush.”
Sylvia’s eyes widened in shock. “She actually said that?”
Yardley leaned back against the headrest, looking utterly defeated. “Yes.”
Sylvia’s mind raced. “But… as long as she’s willing to sign, you’ll go through with it, right? You won’t hesitate anymore?”
The fragile, weeping victim vanished from Sylvia’s eyes, replaced by a cold, venomous calculation.
After stepping out of his car, she walked back into her own opulent, yet utterly trashed villa.
Looking around at the wreckage of her home, her mind flashed back to the humiliation of being dragged away by the police.
She bit down hard on her own finger, clamping her teeth together until she nearly drew blood. Only then did she pull it away.
It was unimaginable. The weak, pathetic Scarlett she had once stepped all over was now constantly winning, grinding them into the dirt at every turn.
Was there really no one left in this world who could put Scarlett Langley in her place?
