Hearing the news sent a violent jolt through Yardley's body.
Bitten by a snake?
How could someone randomly get bitten by a snake in the middle of the city?
A million questions swirled in his mind.
Completely bewildered, he answered, "Yes, understood. Which hospital? I'm on my way."
Twenty minutes later, Nathan pulled up to the emergency room where Sylvia was admitted.
Yardley strode into the ER and immediately spotted Sylvia sitting in the IV lounge, hooked up to a drip.
She looked absolutely horrific. Her hair was teased into a wild, matted bird's nest. Her face was broken out in angry red splotches, her clothes were filthy, and one of her arms was swollen to the size of a balloon. The sight of her was genuinely pitiful.
His brows locked in a deep frown. He closed the distance to her bedside in three long strides.
He looked her up and down, a mixture of profound shock and blazing fury brewing in his eyes.
"What happened?"
"Sylvia, how did you end up like this?"
"Mmph... Mmmph..."
Seeing Yardley was like spotting a lifeboat in open water. Sylvia immediately burst into muffled sobs.
She threw herself into his arms without a second thought. A bizarre, foul odor wafted off her clothes, making Yardley instinctively grimace. His first reaction was to push her away, but seeing how miserable she was, he couldn't bring himself to do it.
Sylvia tried to speak, but Yardley quickly realized something was terribly wrong.
She was struggling to open her mouth, but she couldn't articulate a single word.
