She slipped her arm through his, her voice dropping into a coquettish purr.
"Let's merge our families. Marry me."
His pupils contracted sharply. "Excuse me?"
She batted her eyelashes, feigning shyness, and opened her mouth to press the issue. But his face instantly iced over. With a violent jerk of his arm, he shoved her away.
"I just finalized my divorce. I am not entertaining the idea of marriage anytime in the near future."
His voice was brutal, his expression glacial. "If that's your angle, then I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no interest."
She had been completely confident that tonight was the night she would finally lock him down.
Being rejected so thoroughly, and so callously, sent a sharp flash of disappointment through her eyes. But the sting of rejection only poured gasoline on her burning ambition and competitive drive.
There wasn't a man alive that Veronica Thorne couldn't conquer.
She refused to believe he was the one fortress she couldn't breach.
Forcing a bright, understanding smile onto her face, she made her tone even sweeter.
"Oh, look at you..."
"It was just a suggestion. I'm not trying to force a ring on your finger. There's no need to bite my head off."
"Fine, fine. If you're not ready, we'll drop it. Consider this a free favor."
"Tomorrow at 2 PM, your VIP client will be at an auction house here in Country A. His last name is Bishop, right? I saw him on the guest list."
Dropping the coy act, she pulled out her phone and pulled up a digital invitation from the auction house. Right there on the VIP list was a name: Connor Bishop.
His eyes darkened as he took the phone and scrutinized the screen.
"Are you absolutely certain this is his real name?"
A massive knot of tension in his chest suddenly loosened.
Based on all the intelligence he had gathered, her brother's real name was Zachary Bishop.
But she didn't know the truth: it wasn't that he hadn't looked into it, it was that he hadn't had a choice.
He had been backed into a corner.
He despised her suffocating, know-it-all arrogance.
But he had to admit, the woman was resourceful. She wasn't an idiot; her intellect was miles ahead of Sylvia's and his sisters'.
Scrambling to salvage his pride, he replied stiffly, "I did my due diligence before partnering with them."
He quickly pivoted the conversation. "So, you're saying you have a ticket to tomorrow's auction?"
She raised an eyebrow, clearly relishing the chance to flaunt her status.
"Of course. The auction house sent it to me personally. If you want to go, I can bring you as my plus-one."
"There's a highly exclusive purple diamond going up for bid tomorrow. Purple is my lucky color. I want to buy it and have it set in my tiara... to wear on my wedding day."
