Julian shook his head. "No. Her fever keeps spiking and breaking. The doctor says her immune system took a massive hit, and sleep is the best way to fight the infection."

Zachary sighed, gesturing for Julian to step outside.

Once they reached a quiet corner of the corridor, Zachary fixed him with an intense stare and delivered news Julian didn't expect.

"That bastard is slippery. He had a micro-blade hidden in the heel of his shoe. He cut his bindings, jumped out of the moving car, and vanished into the dense forest." Zachary ground his teeth, his eyes bloodshot. "I sent my guys after him, but the terrain is too brutal. We lost him."

Julian’s heart plummeted.

The knuckles of the hand holding his cigarette turned white. He took a deep drag, forcing down the violent rage threatening to tear out of his chest. He knew now wasn't the time to lose control.

"Let him run. He can run, but he can't hide forever."

Julian’s voice was ice-cold. But as he turned to look through the glass at Scarlett's sleeping form, the freezing anger melted into pure, agonizing heartbreak. He clenched his fists. "If we can't finish him here in Country A, we'll hunt him down the second he sets foot in Bay City."

Zachary noted the heavy, dark circles under Julian's eyes. He sighed, patting his shoulder. "We underestimated them. Kane Stetson blamed Scarlett for Sylvia's arrest and came for blood, and we walked right into it. This is on me, too. Don't... don't beat yourself up."
