Standing quietly to the side, Clarissa and Catherine watched the women revel in their morbid victory. They exchanged a silent, uncomfortable glance.
Unable to hold her tongue any longer, Clarissa finally spoke up. "Mom, can you all keep it down?"
A trace of genuine discomfort crossed her face. "Scarlett is dead. A woman lost her life. Is this really something we should be popping champagne over? Don't you think this is a bit..."
She trailed off.
The room had gone dead silent. The others turned to look at her as if she were an alien species, utterly repulsed by her lack of enthusiasm.
Catherine subtly tugged at Clarissa's sleeve, signaling her to drop it.
Melanie crossed her arms, rolling her eyes. "Oh, please. Don't tell me you actually feel sorry for her."
"Let me make this clear: Scarlett had it coming. God saw how arrogant she was and decided it was time to put her in her place!"
"Besides," Melanie added with a sly smirk, "haven't you been begging to adopt a kid lately? Here's your chance. Dawn has no one to look after her now. Sure, her grandmother is still around, but if Yardley asserts his legal rights as her father, the old hag can't stop him. And since Yardley will definitely remarry, he won't have time to raise her. You take the kid, you get to be a mom, and we get the money. It's a win-win, isn't it?"
At first, Clarissa had been deeply repulsed by their sheer lack of humanity. But Melanie's logic struck a chord.
She had genuinely wanted to adopt Dawn in the past, but Scarlett had fiercely blocked her at every turn. Now that Scarlett was erased from the board, Yardley was the undisputed legal guardian. If he demanded his child back, Jacqueline's objections wouldn't matter in the eyes of the law.
Dawn was her blood niece. If she took the girl in, she would finally be a mother. A spark of genuine excitement lit up Clarissa's eyes.
Now, every single woman in the room had found a reason to celebrate the tragedy.
