Corinne's tone turned downright vicious. "Don't push your luck, Jacqueline! You’re just a defenseless old woman now. What makes you think you can take on the Flynn family?"
Sylvia immediately chimed in, pouring oil on the fire. "You should recognize a losing battle when you see one. In the past, maybe you had the Croft family backing you. But now that Julian and your daughter are both dead, the Crofts have their own mess to deal with. They aren't going to look out for you."
Melanie’s eyes darted around the perimeter of the Magnolia Villa. Noticing there were no bodyguards stationed outside, she exchanged a knowing look with Sylvia. The two women instantly understood each other.
Without wasting another second, they shoved past Jacqueline, determined to force their way inside.
Jacqueline’s eyes widened in alarm. She threw her arms out to block them. "What do you think you're doing?! You are not coming into my home! This is trespassing! Take one more step, and I'm calling the cops!"
But Melanie and Sylvia were already at the threshold, craning their necks to look into the living room. When Melanie spotted a baby crib, her eyes lit up with predatory excitement. They had the numbers advantage today, and Jacqueline was alone. It was the perfect opportunity to grab the baby. Once they snatched Dawn and took her back to the Flynn estate, the law would be on their side anyway. After all, with Scarlett dead, the child legally belonged to them.
"Save your empty threats, you old hag! Move!" Emboldened, Melanie shoved Jacqueline hard toward the stairs. "Sylvia, hurry! Let's get the kid!"
Thrown off balance, Jacqueline stumbled backward and tumbled down the steps.
Fortunately, Yardley lunged forward and caught her just in time. "Are you alright?"
