He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 88

Before she could launch it, Yardley's hand clamped over her wrist like a vice. He easily wrested the vase from her grip, placed it back on the console, and locked her tightly against his chest. Staring down at her with an infuriating sense of superiority, his lips barely moved as he spoke.

"I don't want us to constantly be at each other's throats. Scarlett, I genuinely want to make this marriage work. I know I was wrong for not being there when you were pregnant and giving birth, and I promise I'll make it up to you."

"But if you keep pushing this ridiculous rebellion, you'll force my hand. You... out of everyone, should know exactly what I am capable of."

Scarlett was shaking so violently with rage she could barely stand. She bit her lower lip hard enough to draw blood. "So what? You're going to use your wealth and power to crush me? To force me into submission?"

Yardley let out a heavy sigh. "I'm not trying to force you into anything. I just want you to go back to the way you used to be. Why can't you just go back to being the sweet woman who looked up to me and relied on me? Why do we have to act like enemies on a battlefield?"

Scarlett let out a harsh bark of laughter. "I will never go back to being that naive idiot, I will never look up to you again, and I will certainly never rely on you! Yardley, if you really want to see who has the bigger guns in this fight, you're going to regret it."

Yardley couldn't help but scoff in amusement. "Scarlett, I've been incredibly patient with you. If I actually decided to fight back, these little tantrums of yours wouldn't even register as a threat."

Scarlett laughed bitterly in her mind. "Is that right? Then I hope you hold on to that pathetic arrogance for as long as you can."

Yardley frowned, thoroughly confused. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Scarlett didn't bother offering a verbal reply. She simply shot him a cold, definitive middle finger, turned around, and collapsed onto the sofa.

After arguing for so long, her throat was parched and she was mentally exhausted. She needed to conserve her energy; arguing with a brick wall was pointless.

Yardley might have possessed immense power in Bay City, easily rivaling The Croft family, but her mysterious benefactor held a staggering level of international influence that could crush Yardley Flynn without breaking a sweat.

Naturally, she wasn't about to play her trump card just yet.

With all those bodyguards stationed outside, Yardley clearly had no intention of letting her walk out the front door.

Scarlett needed to calm down and strategize her escape. Should she call Stellan for backup, or figure out a way out herself? She hadn't entirely made up her mind yet.
