It simply wasn't in his nature to yield.
He was never going to compromise on this.
He was betting that Janetta wouldn't be able to hold out for long and would eventually come crawling back.
Having grown up with Sebastian, Beau knew exactly how his mind worked.
He let out a heavy sigh. "I can't argue with your logic. All I'm saying is, Janetta has her own reasons for acting this way."
Sebastian frowned. He didn't hang up immediately.
But his impatience was mounting rapidly as he forced himself to listen to his friend.
"When you married Helena and Janetta fled the country, I accidentally stumbled onto some information. When I went overseas, I asked her about it, but she completely dodged the subject," Beau explained, sounding thoroughly stressed.
Sebastian cut him off, straight to the point. "Did she send you to negotiate for her?"
"No. I didn't even know she left until I saw the news, which is exactly why I'm calling you. I genuinely think she's hiding a private health issue."
"What kind of issue?" Sebastian demanded darkly.
This time, Beau was the one to fall silent. "I'm sorry, Seb. I promised her I wouldn't say anything. Besides, I don't know the full story anyway; I just know it involves her health. Otherwise, I wouldn't be bothering you with this. I'm just worried something might happen to her while she's out there."
Sebastian didn't respond. His silence was chillingly detached.
For a fleeting moment, Beau almost got the impression that Janetta didn't actually matter that much to Sebastian anymore.
The line remained dead silent.
Eventually, Beau broke the tension. "Seb, did you suddenly realize that Helena actually holds a place in your heart?"
The question completely shattered the bizarre equilibrium they had going.
Sebastian let out a mocking sneer. "You're overthinking it. That is absolutely impossible. To me, Helena is nothing more than a means to an end. You think I've fallen in love with her?"
"You've been married for seven years, and you feel absolutely nothing for her?" Beau challenged.
"I do," Sebastian replied, his tone brutally callous. "I won't deny it—I enjoy sleeping with her."
It satisfies my body, not my heart.
