Helena knew exactly what Sebastian was doing, but it barely elicited a reaction from her.
It was as if her resolve to leave him had calcified into stone.
If she truly couldn't save her mother's apartment, she knew her mother wouldn't blame her.
She had tried her best.
And she was so incredibly tired.
Drowning in Sebastian's sweet lies while he ripped her wounds open time and time again had left her with nothing.
There was no turning back.
If she stayed by his side, she and her baby would likely both end up dead.
That was why she had made the desperate SOS call to Lance James, begging him to get her out.
Lance had flown back to the country overnight.
Sebastian knew of Lance, but he had no idea that Lance was the youngest son of the James family of Riverton.
The James family held immense power in military and political circles, which allowed Lance to use a secure military network to hide her.
If the military was shielding someone, Sebastian had no chance of finding them.
For extra security, Lance had hired Susan, a mute caretaker, to handle Helena's meals. Every purchase was made using cash drawn from an untraceable, offshore account.
They had erased her footprint completely.
It was all to guarantee her safety.
Her visa application for New York had already been submitted, but the process took time.
More importantly, her health was too fragile for a long-haul flight.
A military physician had examined her and explicitly stated she needed to wait at least four months before attempting international travel.
Helena wasn't willing to risk the baby, so she resigned herself to laying low in the apartment.
"Are you going to go back?" Lance asked softly, suppressing his own emotions.
"No. Let him tear it down. I've made my peace with it." She shook her head.
She looked up at him. "Lance, you shouldn't stay here. I don't want to drag you into any unnecessary trouble. Besides, your AI team needs you. You should head back to the States. I can take care of myself. Once the four months are up and the visa clears, I'll leave. The new identity you set up for me will be airtight by then."
