"Pregnancy takes two. I couldn't exactly do it on my own."
Your master needed his urges taken care of, yet you despise the woman who satisfied them for being indecent.
What kind of twisted logic was that?
The fake smile vanished from Tobin's face.
"Ms. Sewell, medically speaking, an unborn child is just a cluster of cells. You'd better protect it well. It only becomes the eldest grandson once it's actually born and raised."
The study door opened.
Yorath stepped out, walked straight up to the butler, and kicked him down the stairs without a word.
The chaotic sound of Tobin tumbling down drew the attention of several staff members.
They took one look and immediately shrank back into hiding.
Tobin lay on the first-floor landing, letting out only faint gasps of air.
Tanya came out with two bodyguards and had him carried away.
The entire mansion was left with nothing but the ticking of the antique grandfather clock.
Yorath walked up to Ottilie and said gently, "Let's go home."
She followed him downstairs. When they reached Marcella, he paused. "Sorry to worry you, Mom."
Then he walked right past her.
Ottilie gave Marcella a brief nod and followed him out.
Dawn hadn't broken yet.
Yorath drove at a crawl.
"Always on My Mind" was playing softly in the car.
No promises made,
Yet you hold on tighter.
Without you here,
My world is an endless storm.
I've spent a lifetime
Trying to let you go.
But the memories, the memories, the memories...
They leap from my heart just to hold you...
Ottilie looked at the moon through the window, her heart eerily calm.
Her phone buzzed.
It was piercingly loud in the quiet car.
She pulled it out. It was an email from Lachlan Schmidt.
[Airport at 8 AM. I've arranged someone for you. Grab your ticket and luggage, and leave immediately.]
Ottilie didn't reply. She swiped and deleted it.
"Who's messaging you at this hour?" Yorath's voice drifted over casually.
"Spam," she replied.
"Anything you want, except marriage. I can give you the world."
Ottilie felt no hope, but no disappointment either.
"Should I say thank you?"
"No need. Just stay quietly by my side."
"And if I refuse?"
His fingers slid away from her face.
"As long as I'm breathing, you will spend the rest of your life by my side."
"How much longer do you plan on breathing, Yorath?"
She received no response.
Turning her head, she saw him leaning back against the driver's seat, head tilted slightly toward her, as if he had fallen asleep.
Ottilie reached inside his jacket, sliding her hand down his waistline.
Her fingers met a warm, sticky wetness.
Pulling her hand back, she saw fresh, crimson blood smeared across her fingertips.
She grabbed a wet wipe and cleaned her hand meticulously.
Checking the dashcam, she confirmed it was turned off.
She leaned back in the passenger seat and closed her eyes.
She was a little tired. She needed to sleep for a while.
