He gave a curt nod.
She offered Nyssa a brief smile, turned on her heel, and walked out.
She even thoughtfully pulled the door shut to give them total privacy.
Down by the elevators, she bumped into Jevon and Elian hiding in the stairwell, smoking cigarettes.
Jevon shot her a sidelong sneer. "You're really something else. The man is practically paralyzed, and you're still in there seducing him into bed."
"Why wouldn't you assume your boss was the one seducing me into bed?"
She stared at the digital floor indicator. The elevator was still several floors away.
She was losing her patience.
Jevon scoffed. "We know exactly what kind of person you are. Let's hear it. What kind of sick deal did you make with Dr. Thorne to get discharged from that facility? Did you sleep with him?"
Her entire body went rigid. Her face turned to ice.
She slowly turned to face him. "Don't you think you're sticking your nose where it doesn't belong?"
Jevon gave a harsh laugh. "Don't think he doesn't know about all the filthy little stunts you've pulled..."
The elevator chimed and opened. Without uttering a single goodbye, she stepped inside and let the doors close.
Down in the lobby, she spotted a young nurse walking by.
"Excuse me," she said sweetly. "There are two men smoking in the stairwell on the sixth floor."
The young nurse's face immediately scrunched up in righteous fury. "Unbelievable. This is a hospital. How could anyone smoke here? They clearly don't care about the patients' health at all. I'll handle this immediately."
A minute later, the fierce nurse arrived at the stairwell.
She found her hospital's director and his billionaire friend puffing away.
"Look at the way she acts," Jevon was saying. "He just spoils her way too much. That's why she treats us like dirt."
"When has she ever respected us?" Elian muttered.
"Seriously, what exactly is her relationship with that Dr. Thorne?" Jevon pressed. "Two years ago, he suddenly adopted a little girl out of nowhere. You don't think it's hers, do you? And now the guy has vanished, so we can't even force a DNA test."
"We need to dig into this," Elian agreed darkly. "We can't let him make a fool out of our boss."
Suddenly, her screen lit up. Lachlan Schmidt was calling.
"I heard you're marrying him. But we have a signed contract. You aren't planning on breaching it, are you?"
If she were a nobody, breaching the contract would mean nothing—no one could touch her.
But if she married Yorath and then breached it, she would be hit with an apocalyptic financial penalty.
Lachlan was never going to pass up a golden opportunity to publicly humiliate Yorath.
"I'm not marrying him. Find a time to announce our partnership. I'll play my part."
"No time like the present," Lachlan replied smoothly. "Let's do it tomorrow. I'll host a press conference and officially announce your signing with my agency."
"Done." She hung up.
A text notification popped up on her screen. It was from Yorath.
*Get some sleep. If you need anything, tell Yvonne to handle it. Come back to the hospital tomorrow morning.*
