10:00 PM.
Yorath's phone buzzed.
It was Yvonne.
"Sir, she didn't go back to the manor."
He was supposed to be strictly resting, but he had just spent two hours on the phone hammering out corporate fires.
Hearing Yvonne's report made a fresh migraine flare behind his eyes.
He ended the call without a single word.
He opened his messages, typed out a few words to Ottilie, deleted them, and tossed the phone onto the mattress.
Jevon was squirming uncomfortably on the fold-out cot she had been sleeping on earlier.
"This thing is a nightmare. My back is screaming. How does she sleep on this?"
He groaned, rubbing his neck. "She definitely ran back to that run-down dump of an apartment. Honestly, that woman is impossible to deal with."
Elian was sprawled out on the plush sofa, lazily flipping through a medical journal.
Without looking up, he chimed in. "She's hiding too many skeletons. Are you really dead set on marrying her? Nyssa is vastly more suited for you."
"Yeah," Jevon agreed. "Nyssa is level-headed. She doesn't cause scenes, she's forgiving, and she actually knows how to handle high-society damage control. Ottilie is a live wire. You so much as glance at another woman, and she'll burn the building down, throw a tantrum, and threaten to jump off a bridge."
Yorath let them vent in total silence.
When they finally ran out of breath, he delivered three flat words.
"She wouldn't care."
"Are you kidding?" Jevon scoffed. "Is there anything she's afraid to do? She practically blinded Nyssa, and has she ever even apologized for it?"
Nyssa stepped out of the private bathroom right as he said it. She offered a gracious smile.
"It's all in the past. Please, let's not bring it up anymore. Honestly, Yorath, your marriage to her is a wonderful thing. I'll make sure to have an incredible wedding gift prepared."
Yorath waited until she was standing next to the bed. "You don't need to come to the wedding. And you don't need to send a gift."
Nyssa's smile fractured for a split second before she seamlessly pasted it back together.
"Of course. She still misunderstands me, so my presence would only upset her. A person only gets married once; it would be a shame to let minor drama ruin your big day. I completely understand."
"See? It's always Ottilie causing the problems," Jevon muttered. "Don't let it get to you, Nyssa. After the official wedding, we'll throw a private celebration just for him, and we just won't invite her."
Elian smiled charmingly at Nyssa. "I'll just make a quick appearance at the ceremony and then come keep you company."
"You guys are his groomsmen, stop joking around," Nyssa replied gently. "I'm perfectly fine on my own. I don't need a babysitter."
She pulled the phone away, stared at the unrecognized number for a second, and then brought it back to her ear. "You're injured. You should be asleep."
"Why didn't you go back to the manor?"
"I'm not going back there."
That house, the one he had shared with Nyssa, felt entirely contaminated to her.
A heavy two-second silence hung on the line. "Come to the hospital early tomorrow. And don't go wandering off."
"I know," she replied, immediately hanging up.
The next morning.
She walked out of her building right at 7:30 AM.
Lachlan's sleek town car had been idling at the curb for a while.
After a stint in the hospital, he had fully recovered from his injuries.
Today, he was dressed impeccably in a razor-sharp designer suit.
Ottilie was wearing a high-necked, long-sleeved black dress that left zero skin exposed.
It was severe, elegant, and breathtakingly cold.
