He Waited She Wilted (Ottilie and Yorath) novel Chapter 223

"No, my agency needs it for a contract. I'll bring it back tonight. I'll pay you, just let me borrow it."

Marie was an uneducated, traditional woman, and her mind didn't turn that fast.

On top of that, she didn't control the household finances and had no pension.

Every day, James Sewell gave her exactly thirty dollars for groceries, not a penny more.

Her only pocket money came from whatever she could scrape by saving on food.

Hearing that Ottilie would pay her for the records, she immediately demanded, "A thousand dollars. Not a penny less."

Ottilie transferred the money.

Looking at her balance, Marie was thoroughly satisfied.

"Wait here, I'll go get it. Keep your voice down, don't wake your father."

She tiptoed into the house, quickly retrieved the document, and handed it over.

When Ottilie left, Marie walked her to the door.

The cab hadn't left; it was waiting for her right outside.

Marie eyed it and commented, "You've been with Yorath all this time, and he treats you like this? He won't even buy you a car?"

"He's my boss, why would he buy me a car?"

"Are you two really done?" Marie was highly disappointed.

Though she considered her daughter a lost investment, deep down she still hoped she would land a wealthy man.

"We're done. If that's all, I'm leaving." Ottilie turned to get into the car.

Marie grabbed her. "The hens laid a lot of eggs. Let me get you some to take back to the city."

She went inside and brought out a basket of eggs along with a heavy burlap sack.

"The sack is full of homegrown cucumbers, peppers, and eggplants. It'll last you a week in the city. Save money on groceries where you can, work hard, and buy yourself a house."

Her son hadn't given her a dime his entire life and constantly leeched off her.

But since a son was supposed to care for them in old age, he was naturally the priority.

Shawn immediately grew suspicious.

"Didn't she cut ties with the family? Why would she come back? Sneaking around... was she asking for money?"

"No, she came for the family records."

"What for?"

"Said her company needed it for a contract." Marie kept sweeping.

Shawn turned back inside, grumbling under his breath.

Suddenly, a loud yell echoed from the house, "Crap! She tricked you! She took the records to elope with some random guy!"
