Ottilie fired back, "With absolutely no evidence—just a single IP address—Ms. Tarrant has already decided I'm the culprit. You sure love making false accusations and condemning people. Were you some corrupt politician in a past life?"
Nyssa's eyes instantly welled up. She lowered her head, looking utterly wronged. "I'm sorry. I misspoke. I didn't mean it that way. Please don't be angry, Ms. Sewell."
"An apology requires sincerity. Like dropping to your knees and begging, or slapping yourself a few times. Empty words don't cut it."
Ottilie was rarely this aggressive, but today she was on the offensive.
Nyssa, in turn, played up her frailty even more.
"It's all my fault. Ms. Sewell must still resent me. I've explained what happened three years ago countless times. We were acting on set, blocking out a scene. The cameras captured everything, and it was written in the script. I never intended to actually hurt you. Why won't you believe me? Even the law recognized it as an accident."
With that, she sat on the sofa, bowing her head as tears fell.
Elian and Jevon, who usually rushed to her defense, were uncharacteristically silent today. They seemed distracted.
Just then, Lorenzo's furious roar echoed from the backyard.
"You worthless bastard! For the sake of some woman, you're abandoning your own brother? I wasted my life raising you!"
Yorath didn't utter a word.
Lorenzo was doing all the screaming.
After a few minutes of his tirade, Yorath's voice finally drifted in.
"Not only am I going to let Quentin face jail time, but I'm also going to leak this whole mess to the press. Instead of waiting for our enemies to strike, our family should strike first. Let whoever is pulling the strings see that the Fordhams have no weaknesses—nothing they can use against us."
Yorath's voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a piercing clarity that reached everyone in the living room.
A second later, the sound of crashing objects erupted from the backyard.
Lorenzo was apoplectic. "Are you even human?! For a woman, you disrespected our family legacy and fed your elders a pack of lies! I let that slide, and now you're plotting against your own blood? Listen to me, Yorath! As long as I draw breath, you will never marry that actress! If you don't bail your brother out, I will kill myself right at your wedding!"
"Everyone dies eventually," Yorath replied coolly. "It's just a matter of time."
Then came another massive crash.
Lorenzo stormed in from the backyard. The patriarch, who had commanded respect his entire life, was trembling, his face pale with fury.
Ignoring the room full of people, he marched straight for the front door. After a few steps, he realized something and snapped his head back to glare at Ottilie.
His eyes were so sharp they looked ready to carve her into pieces.
