Ottilie didn't move. Instead, she grabbed his hand.
"I'm not leaving. I wasn't thinking straight. I dragged you into this."
If she let him drive her away now, he would be harboring a fugitive and treated as an accomplice.
In a fraction of a second, the bodyguards slammed the car door shut, surrounding them completely and cutting off any chance of escape.
However, they showed remarkable restraint, keeping their hands to themselves.
"If I were scared, I wouldn't be taking you with me," Yves said firmly.
Her heart ached at his words.
"I know you genuinely care about me, and you're my only backup. Please, protect yourself. I need you safe on the outside so you can help me when the time comes. If we both get locked up, who's going to bail us out?"
That finally made him hesitate.
"If this is what you want... I'll listen to you."
She gave him a small, reassuring smile. "Yeah. Wait for my word."
Turning back to the bodyguards, she said, "Lead the way."
Seeing that she had given up on running, they closed ranks around her and escorted her toward the main road.
In the distance, a fleet of black SUVs sat neatly parked along both sides of the street.
Suddenly, a sharp honk pierced the air from behind.
A car was coming.
One of the bodyguards grabbed her arm, pulling her toward the edge of the road.
Being highly trained, their immediate instinct was to herd her to the side, ensuring she couldn't bolt.
But the approaching car broke all the rules, accelerating straight toward them.
Survival instinct kicked in. The bodyguards dove out of the path of destruction.
Only the man still gripping Ottilie's arm remained.
The car swerved right up to them, the passenger side facing her directly.
The window was rolled down.
"Ms. Sewell, get in!" Yvonne's voice barked from inside.
Ottilie instantly twisted her arm, executing a swift grappling move to slam the bodyguard against the concrete planter.
With a vicious kick, she sent him tumbling into the bushes.
Ottilie pulled her phone from her pocket and chucked it out the window without a second thought.
They sped out of the residential complex, hit the main road, and eventually stopped in an older, run-down district with no surveillance cameras.
Yvonne got out, led Ottilie through a labyrinth of narrow alleys, and slipped into a nondescript room where they changed their clothes.
The basement level connected directly to a subway station.
They took the train to a massive residential complex on the other side of town.
Yvonne punched a passcode into a door with practiced ease, pulled Ottilie inside, adjusted the security camera above the threshold, and locked them in.
Ottilie stood to the side, watching Yvonne's cold, calculated efficiency.
For the first time, she truly realized that Yvonne was anything but ordinary.
Using her phone, Yvonne adjusted the angle of the camera outside the door until she had a crystal-clear view of the entire hallway. Only then did she turn to Ottilie.
"Don't worry, Ms. Sewell. We're just going to lay low here for a few days. We have enough food and supplies to last us half a month."
"And after half a month?" Ottilie asked.
"If Mr. Yorath sends someone to pick us up, we go back. If not... I proceed with the original plan and smuggle you out of the country."
