Yorath slowly raised his eyes, locking a lethal glare onto Dr. Thorne. "Are you threatening me?"
"I wouldn't dare."
"Hmph! There is no shortage of brilliant doctors in this world. Guys like you are a dime a dozen. My people don't need you."
With that, he turned to Jevon. "Call Soren. Hand over all the evidence we've gathered of Dr. Thorne's bribery and corruption to the police."
Jevon shoved his hands into his pockets and strolled toward Dr. Thorne with a predatory, mocking grin.
"Dr. Thorne, you've lined your pockets quite a bit over the years. Setting aside everything else, just the massive box of gold you extorted from our Ms. Sewell alone is a staggering sum. You're looking at a life sentence. Let's go."
Dr. Thorne was a wealthy man. He had a prestigious career and a picture-perfect family.
Being slapped with a life sentence in his middle age meant he wouldn't see the outside world until he was ancient.
All the money in the world wouldn't mean a thing if he couldn't enjoy it.
And for someone in his position, losing his freedom was a fate worse than death.
Dr. Thorne's knees buckled, and he dropped straight to the floor in front of Yorath.
"Mr. Fordham, please! I'm begging you, let me off! I'll return all the money! I'll apologize to Ms. Sewell! I was wrong. I deserve to die!"
Jevon viciously kicked Dr. Thorne in the ribs, sneering, "Who the hell do you think you are? Do you think you're even worthy of breathing the same air as Ottilie? Just laying eyes on you would dirty her vision. Apologize? You don't have the right."
"I don't! I don't have the right! I deserve to die! But please, don't call the cops! I know everything that happened at St. Dymphna's Psychiatric Facility! I kept evidence! If you press charges against them, I can be your star witness!"
A sudden spark of desperation lit up his mind as he realized what his true leverage was.
"I have videos of the doctors conducting illegal experiments on the patients! I have footage of the staff assaulting the female inmates!"
Yorath raised a hand, cutting him off sharply.
"Do you have videos of Ottilie?"
Dr. Thorne nodded frantically, then, realizing how dangerous that sounded, furiously shook his head.
Yorath could already imagine exactly what kind of horrors were in those videos.
It felt as though someone had reached into his chest and violently ripped his heart out, leaving a hollow, freezing void.
His body turned to stone, completely paralyzed by the chill.
Jevon knew Yorath better than anyone. He understood exactly what kind of agony was tearing through his friend right now.
Grabbing Dr. Thorne by the collar, he hauled him up. "You sick bastards. You all deserve to die."
Yorath stepped right up to her, staring at her intently, raking his gaze over her from head to toe as if he were seeing her for the first time.
Then, he pulled her into a crushing embrace.
Bewildered, Ottilie asked, "What's wrong with you?"
He cupped her chin, tilted her head up, and crashed his lips over hers.
Ottilie instantly braced her hands against his chest, her instincts screaming to resist.
But the second she pushed, Yorath seized her wrists in an iron grip. "Don't fight me. Let me have this."
Without another word, he scooped her up into his arms and took the stairs two at a time.
He pressed her deeply into the mattress. His weight was overwhelming, making it hard for her to breathe.
"I haven't showered yet."
"You don't need to. I love the way you smell."
Yorath trailed kisses down her jawline, nuzzling against her earlobe, aggressively taking in her scent.
"We don't have protection," Ottilie stated coldly. There was no way in hell she was having a baby with him.
