Ottilie stayed silent for a few seconds before reaching down to help the woman up.
"If someone in your family is sick, you can just tell Mr. Fordham. I'm sure he wouldn't refuse to help. But stealing is crossing a line."
Winnie cried harder, tears streaming down her face. "You don't understand, Ms. Sewell. Mr. Fordham is utterly ruthless. A while back, another maid took home some leftover fruit that was going to be thrown out anyway. When Mr. Fordham found out, he had her sent straight to the police station. He'll never let me off the hook! I'm begging you, please don't tell him. Please!"
With that, she tried to fall to her knees again.
Ottilie caught her arms and held her up. "Alright, I won't tell him. Stop dropping to your knees every two seconds. But you can't steal anything else, ever again."
She genuinely couldn't help Winnie financially. Her own pockets were completely empty.
"Thank you, Ms. Sewell! You are truly a saint!"
Wiping her nose and eyes on her sleeve, the maid hastily gathered the dropped incense bundles and scurried away.
Losing her mood to admire the lotus flowers, Ottilie headed back to the living room.
Yorath was already home.
He was sitting with Jevon, speaking in hushed, serious tones.
Seeing her walk in, Yorath asked, "Where did you go?"
"The lotuses bloomed in the backyard. I went to look at them." Ottilie walked over to the sofa, sat down, and took a massive gulp of ice water from a glass on the table.
Yorath immediately frowned. "You're prone to cramps, and it's that time of the month. Ice water will just make it worse."
Ottilie ignored him and took another sip.
Before she could take a third, Yorath snatched the glass out of her hand and replaced it with his own mug of warm tea.
She lost her appetite for a drink immediately.
Jevon chimed in, "Primal Instinct is a massive hit. You really are destined for stardom, Ottilie. Your first role was just a supporting character, and you blew up overnight. Now you're back, and it's happening all over again. Tsk, tsk. Yorath really knows how to pick 'em."
Yorath casually suggested, "Since the lotuses have bloomed, let's host a Summer Garden Soiree here. You can invite all your friends."
"I don't have any friends," Ottilie replied flatly.
"What about Yves Walden?" Yorath pointedly suggested.
Stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars was a major felony. It meant guaranteed prison time.
Winnie shrieked in absolute terror, crying out, "I'm innocent! I didn't take them every day! My family just got sick, I only started taking them two days ago!"
Yvonne let out a cold sneer. "When you actually started stealing is something the police will figure out. They won't falsely accuse you."
With a sharp gesture, she ordered the bodyguards to drag the maid away.
Just then, Winnie caught sight of Ottilie walking out. "Ms. Sewell, save me!" she wailed.
Ottilie frowned. "Yvonne, she's going through a hard time. Just let it go this once."
Yvonne turned to Ottilie and offered a stiff, formal bow. "Ms. Sewell, this is a severe breach of security. It's not my call to make."
Ottilie understood immediately. She needed Yorath's approval.
Turning back into the house, she found the living room empty. Jevon and Yorath were gone.
She made her way to the study. Yorath was inside on the phone, but the second he saw her walk in, he abruptly hung up.
