1:00 AM.
Nyssa lay in a hospital bed, her finger wrapped in gauze, frowning constantly from the pain.
Only Yorath and the rest of his inner circle remained in the room.
Nyssa carefully studied Yorath's expression, but as usual, his face was an unreadable mask.
"Yorath, I honestly had no idea about Director Langley's movie beforehand. When he suddenly announced me as the lead in front of all those people, I had no choice but to play along. I know that script was tailor-made for Ms. Sewell. Give it some time, and I'll clarify everything to the media."
Yorath replied evenly, "The role is yours."
"Are you sure that's okay? She's definitely going to be upset."
Jevon chimed in, "You saved her life! If she can't even give up one stupid role, she's barely human! You were almost horribly disfigured!"
Nyssa smiled faintly, acting completely unfazed. "Ms. Sewell is Yorath's person. Even if it costs me my life, I would do everything to keep her safe. My affection for you, Yorath, naturally extends to her."
The room of men fell silent at that.
Jevon shot Yorath a look before turning his face away, refusing to speak.
Elian Zouch scowled darkly.
Nobody said a word.
Nyssa let out a soft groan.
"What is it?" The men jumped to their feet in unison.
"My hand hurts."
Most of the acid had been caught by her dress, but a few drops had still splashed onto her finger.
Thankfully, they had treated it immediately on the scene; otherwise, it would have been catastrophic.
Jevon looked at Yorath and said, "You should stay here and look after her, Yorath. She's incredibly fragile right now and shouldn't be left alone."
Elian nodded. "I'm heading to the police station to check on the investigation. We're going to make whoever orchestrated this pay a massive price."
The hospital door suddenly swung open.
With the men gone, Kendrick Walden was the only one left in the room.
Nyssa stared at the empty hospital room, staying silent for a long time.
Kendrick stepped up to the bed and kept his voice low. "We secured the role, but our methods were extreme. We deeply offended Director Langley. We won't get another chance to work with him."
Nyssa let out a dismissive laugh.
"The industry is always churning out new talent. Zavier Langley isn't the first brilliant director, and he certainly won't be the last. Besides, if we can't even secure our present, who gives a damn about the future? As long as this benefits us, the movie becomes a hit, and I climb higher up the ladder, Zavier Langley will eventually have to come begging like a dog anyway."
Kendrick noted, "Ottilie does have some serious tricks up her sleeve. She pulls a disappearing act and instantly draws every single one of them away."
"Let her draw them away. What does her little popularity contest actually accomplish? What tangible thing has she actually gained? Is she going to go back to passing out flyers in the plaza for fifty bucks a day?"
Nyssa was an absolute realist.
She didn't care about the journey, only the result.
Idealists like Ottilie certainly had their own strengths, but they were the kind of strengths normal people couldn't emulate.
